Very good in glossy photographic wrappers, lightly sunned, pages age toned but clean. Inscribed "to dear Alasdair with best wishes and some hope John, 4 December 1990". Provenance: from the recent Glasgow dispersal sale of Alasdair Gray's library. Gray (1934-2019) is acknowledged as one of the most innovative figures in Scottish literature and culture. Painter, novelist, playwright, poet and editor, Gray frequently combined his diverse artistic talents within single works to challenge existing forms. He has been described as 'Blending satire and tragedy, realism and fantasy, his work has been credited with spurring a renaissance in Scottish literature.' A little foxing to end papers with stamps of Sutton Manor. Well illustrated with black and white photographic plates on brown card. Chapters 25 and 26 on Prevention of Accidents and First Aid are printed on pink paper for quick reference. Very Good 1911

(38x31cm) On-set large format vintage photograph of the director Ken Russell giving - or perhaps taking - direction from the co-star of his movie about Gaudier Breska, Savage Messiah. (Scuffing to edges, otherwise very good) On the verso is Ken Russell's oval ownership stamp: 'The K-S Russell Collection', no photographer given. Ken Russell's film dramatisation of the obsessional relationship between the young French artist Henry Gaudier (Scott Antony) and Sophie Suzanne Brzeska (Dorothy Tutin), was scripted by Christopher Logue and followed the cultish triumph of his film, The Devils. Very Good. pp 400 A surprisingly unbuttoned biography of the author of The Wind in the Willows inscribed by his nephew, the Canadian novelist on the first blank: 'Gordon Hill Grahame "Ballanack" Jan.1960'. The book is in very good green buckram with some pale marking to the boards and offsetting to endpapers from inserted newspaper clippings. Very Good 1959

In near fine condition, signed to upper cover by Zaidi and inscribed "To Prof. Robinson with compliments 16.7.64". From the collection of Kenneth Robinson (1914-2005), a distinguished civil servant who became an expert on colonial government and administration. He was closely involved in international aspects of postwar planning, including former colonies, in south-West Africa (now Namibia), and became the Commonwealth Office expert on French West Africa. He became assistant secretary in the CO in 1946 (and head of the West African department), but resigned in 1948 to become reader in Commonwealth government at Oxford and subsequently director and professor of commonwealth affairs at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London. He was vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong from 1965 to 1972. Near Fine 1964

The striking image is nicked and rubbed with punctures where it was originally stapled into position. A superb object nonetheless. Good 1955

In fresh burgundy boards, the edges and preliminaries are lightly foxed, the binding is tight and the pages clean with no inscriptions. In a striking dust jacket featuring a monocled gentleman sporting daisies on his top hat. The white panels are soiled and the spine sunned with a couple of chips. Very Good 1928

London: Collins, 1974. pp 200 A first edition of this humorous historical novel for children, illustrated throughout with delightful line drawings by the author. Inscribed by Sheila Sancha to British cartoonist and author John Ryan "To John and Priscilla with love and added thanks for writing so many words so well". Very good in blue cloth, spotting to the text block edges, in a good plus dust jacket, the panels are bright but creased, chipped and torn to the edges. John Ryan (1921 – 2009) was a British animator and cartoonist, best remembered for his character Captain Pugwash which began as a comic strip which spawned books and a TV series which was animated by Ryan in real time using a system of cut-out characters and boats, moved by hidden cardboard levers.
