Tokyo: Gendai Hanga Center, 1984. First Edition. Original cloth. Fine. FIRST EDITION, WITH STUNNING ORIGINAL SILKSCREEN PRINT BY WARHOL, of the catalog for Warhol's celebrated "Kiku" Tokyo exhibition. Capitalizing on Warhol's strong appeal to Japanese collectors, members of the Gendai Hanga Center in Tokyo asked Warhol in 1982 to create a body of work specifically for them, focusing in particular on images of flowers. Warhol agreed, and created a beautiful series of images inspired by the chrysanthemum (the traditional symbol representing the Japanese emperor and Imperial House). The exhibition was a success and Warhol's exquisite prints for the "Kiku" (the Japanese word for chrysanthemum) exhibition have since become highly regarded by both critics and collectors. One of 1500 copies printed. Tokyo: Gendai Hanga Center, 1984. Octavo, original silver-lettered silver cloth; custom silk box. Without rare original slipcase. With original silkscreen print bound-in and…

Lancaster: Physical Review, 1931. First Edition. Original wrappers. Fine. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Einstein's paper outlining a thought experiment to suggest that the uncertainty principle requires the acknowledgement of an indeterminate past. "To Heisenberg at the 1920's only the prediction of the future was important, and the mathematical theory assisted him to calculate the probability of the end-state given the initial state: the description of the intermediate development of the system between two objectively recorded or recordable states did not seem to correspond to physical reality. "On the other hand, Einstein, as a critic of quantum physics, did not admit Heisenberg's standpoint, especially that the indeterminacy principle does not refer to the past. In the paper 'Knowledge of Past and Future in Quantum Mechanics' (1931), Einstein proposed an imaginary experiment, in which 'the possibility of describing the past path of one particle would lead to…

Description:
Munich: Vidavnitstvi Prometei, 1947. First Ukrainian edition. Very Good. FIRST UKRAINIAN EDITION OF ORWELL'S CLASSIC POLITICAL ALLEGORY. We offer here the first edition of George Orwell's anti-Stalinist parable Animal Farm to be distributed (secretly and illegally) behind the Iron Curtain. Published in Ukrainian at the initiative of a group of socialist but anti-Stalinist Ukrainian dissidents, the publication of this edition is a significant incident in the long history of troubled relations between Ukraine and Russia, thus resonating with recent events. "In April 1946, [Igor] Shevchenko wrote to Orwell, now a mourning widower and single parent of an adopted baby, requesting authorisation to publish his Ukrainian translation. He described to Orwell how he had translated the book out loud to a transfixed audience of Ukrainian DPs [Displaced Persons] and they had always been puzzled how the West could be so naïve about the Soviet Union and wondered if anyone "knew the truth." He concluded: "Your…

Leipzig & Vienna: Bibliographisches Institit, 1904. First edition. Contemporary half-morocco. Fine. FIRST EDITION OF HAECKEL'S BEAUTIFUL AND HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL COLLECTION OF "ART FORMS OF NATURE", WITH 100 STUNNNING FOLIO PLATES, MOST COLORED. "The geometric shapes and natural forms, captured with exceptional precision in Ernst Haeckel's prints, still influence artists and designers to this day... Powerful modern microscopes have confirmed the accuracy of Haeckel's prints, which even in their day, became world famous. Haeckel's portfolio, first published between 1899 and 1904 in separate installments... illustrate Haeckel's fundamental monistic notion of the 'unity of all living things' and the wide variety of forms are executed with utmost delicacy. Incipient microscopic organisms are juxtaposed with highly developed plants and animals. The pages, ordered according to geometric and 'constructive' aspects, document the oneness of the world in its most diversified forms. This collection of plates was…
