Here is a nice picture book about the Kansas City Public Service streetcars used during the 1940s and 50s. Extensive captions make this more than a picture book. Of the 64 pages in this book, 39 pages are in color. Most Color photographs are of the PCC cars operated by KCPS, but also 2 pages show the freight motors including a large one page color photograph of Motor #1. Four 4 pages of KCPS work cars are in color. Two pages of older cars are in color but the early efforts of color photography and film preservation make for some less than sharp images. Included is a roster of KSPS PCC cars operated in Philadelphia on PTC and SEPTA.

Robert Olmsted, well-known railroad photographer and prolific Publisher//of railroad books, has teamed up with South Platte Press to publish a pictorial about Don Ball Curve, located in Roberts hometown of Lawrence, Kansas. Informally named for another master of railroad photography and book publishing, the curve is located along the Kansas City-Denver main line of the Union Pacific. Using Robert's own excellent black & white photography, the book is devoted to the Union Pacific and Rock Island trains (the latter using trackage rights) that have rolled through Don Ball Curve between 1948 and 2007. It can also serve as a guide for railfans interested in visiting Lawrence and the Curve with its current high Volume of train traffic. Most photographs are from the 1950s and 60s. There are a few color steam photographs and many early diesel photographs including a number of the Erie-builts. The book is nicely laid out and it is good to see a title about the KCS which has had few books published about it. The KCS system in the U.S. sprawls across nine Midwestern states with headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. The system reaches into Illinois to Jacksonville, Springfield, and East St. Louis. The traditional southern main line moves traffic to Dallas, New Orleans, and Port Arthur, Texas. Later additions to the system carry KCS rails east through Monroe, Louisiana, and Jackson, Mississippi, to Meridian and Artesia, Mississippi, and an even later addition touches Tennessee at Counce. Southern Texas and Mexico-bound traffic rolls from Beaumont through Houston to Corpus Christi and Laredo, where KCS rails continue deep into Mexico.
