I want, from my heart, to | thank you all for the gift you | have sent me for my Red Cross | ‘Aid to Russia’ fund. | From all over the country | similar donations are reaching | me. I feel they are particularly | significant because they show | the continued & intense concern | of the citizens of Great Britain | for the glorious struggle for | freedom of the Russian people, & | for the sufferings so silently & | unflinchingly borne by them for | their national life & ideals. | I send you my heartfelt | thanks for your help. | Yours Sincerely | Clementine S. Churchill”. Condition is very good with some light browning to the wartime paper, which bears the original fold… Read More

Description:
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1969. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Lauren Ford. This interesting little book is excerpted from Churchill's A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. On 29 December 1938, Churchill wrote to his wife regarding his initial draft about this part of his history: "I have just finished writing about Joan of Arc. I think she is the winner in the whole of French history. The leading women of these days were more forceful and remarkable than the men." Profusely illustrated, this slim volume contains 17 illustrations by the distinguished artist Lauren Ford. Though 16 of these illustrations had previously been published as black and white drawings, this is their first appearance in color. The illustration on the dust jacket front cover and frontispiece is original to this edition. This little-known edition is scarce and thus missing from many collections. Many of the copies that do come on the market are ex-library with attendant flaws, very often including library stickers or… Read More

Description:
London: Punch, 1909. This original printed appearance of a Punch cartoon featuring Winston S. Churchill comes from the personal collection of Gary L. Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon titled "'Judging Character By Correspondence': Or, The Winston Touch” appeared thus on p.283 of the 21 April 1909 issue of Punch. The artist is Edward Tennyson Reed. The cartoon is captioned "'Churchill: I agree with Grayson - if our elders presume on our reverence and admiration for their splendid careers to check criticism and exact obedience, there are a few of us, I think, (I know one!) not constructed along those lines!; Just my sentiments to a T!! Our artist has curiously few opportunities of attending Cabinet councils, but, after a careful study of Mr. Winston Churchill's letter to his constituents about the '8'… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan and Co., 1894. First edition. Hardcover. John Lockwood Kipling. This is a compelling set of British first editions of perhaps Kipling’s most famous works – the first and second Jungle Books. These copies were previously owned by Churchill’s friends and publishers, Frank and Nelson Doubleday, and apparently used by Nelson to prepare Doubleday’s 1946 editions. Ironically, Kipling’s quintessential tales of India were conceived in Vermont, where Kipling and his father, John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) “worked together in the closest harmony… as the two sat smoking their pipes and plotting out fresh stories together.” (Allen, Kipling Sahib, p.328) Here Mowgli was born, the infant found by Father Wolf, saved from Shere Khan, and tutored in the Laws of the Jungle by Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear. “The pen took charge, and I watched it begin to write stories about Mowgli and the animals, which later grew into the Jungle Books.” Kipling had left India for the last… Read More
