Description:
Penguin, 1996. Used.,VINTAGE PAPERBACK.CREASES TO SPINE AND COVER PAGES DISCOLOURED DUE TO AGE.MARK ON FRONT PAGEJackson's Dilemma is a novel by Iris Murdoch, published in 1995. It was Murdoch's last novel; she died four years later, on 8 February 1999. In her final years, Murdoch suffered from the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, one of the symptoms of which is a reduced vocabulary and decreased word fluency. Researchers at University College London found in 2004 that the language used in Jackson's Dilemma is noticeably simpler than in her earlier works. They suggested that the novel - written in longhand, with few revisions and little room for editorial interference - offers a "unique opportunity" to study the effects of Alzheimer's on spontaneous writing, and hoped that their research could help to develop better diagnostic tests, capable of picking up on these subtle changes in cognitive ability.

Description:
London: Allen & Unwin, 2007. Used. Six friends head for Jamaica to take part in the Negociate Classic, a notoriously tough and dangerous deep-water swimming race. Beautiful, rich, and favored by fortune, they ooze confidence and success.Jeremy Hutchison doesn?t belong with these golden people, but his dogged admiration and enthusiasm?not to mention his money?have earned him a place. But beneath the surface this is a group on the edge of crisis?none more so than Jeremy, who is playing for the highest stakes of all. As the race approaches and the tension builds to an excruciating pitch, the friends turn from each other to face the doubts and secrets of their own lives.Taut and engrossing, this is a compulsive read from an unflinching observer of human folly. But even as Knox peels away the layers and exposes the brutal reality beneath the fa?ade of friendship, he hints at the possibility of human kindness and the redemptive power of love.

He is remembered as a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement, as expressed in the title of his most celebrated film, Rebel Without a Cause, in which he starred as troubled teenager Jim Stark. Description:
New York: Picador, 2000. Used. At the turn of the nineteenth century, ten-year-old James Miranda Barry enrolled as a medical student in Edinburgh, the start of a glorious career as a military surgeon. Across the Empire, Barry achieved fame not only as a brilliant physician, but also a legendary duellist and a celebrated social figure. But James Miranda Barry was also a woman. Her greatest achievement of all had been to 'pass' for a man for more than fifty years. Patricia Duncker's novel tells Barry's story for the first time, in a richly inventive and entertaining tale of dark family secrets, adultery, questioned paternity and colonial history. It confirms her rare talent as a writer of profound ideas and immense storytelling power. 'A miracle of a book that is richly atmospheric and gains the murky excitement of a Victorian thriller ' Sunday Times 'A marvellous work . . . superbly imagined and flamboyantly written' Beryl Bainbridge
