Description:
[North East, Maryland. Likely 1870s-1880s]. Broadside. 17 x 8 inches. Folds, as issued. Stains at left edge; soil to verso and some old creases; good. An ephemeral price list illustrated with nine engravings that advertise razor strops made by North East, Maryland company. An 1878 Maryland directory noted the firm had removed from Philadelphia to North East and could "produce and ship to all points of the country immense quantities of patent razor strops, spectacle and eyeglass cases." Illustrated 19th century American broadsides devoted to barbering -whether for self-care at home or in a barbershop- are scarce, especially of any notable size. One example located in the Jay T. Last Collection.

Description:
[Np. June 7, 1933]. [1]p. Typed Manuscript Signed. Sm. Folio Sheet. Pencil signature. Folds; Near Fine. Typed manuscript poem, "Jack's Radiovisionettes," written in tribute to radio/proto-television actor Jack Wolseifer-"one of the Radiovisionaries." The poem celebrates the integration of aural and visual media in an era when mass-entertainment radio and early experiments in television were on the rise. In 1928, New York City radio station WMCA presented the first regular visual-not just sound-broadcasting feature. "WMCA staged a real novelty by presenting the first picture broadcasting feature last evening. A group of players introduced as the Radiovisionaries lived up to their name by enacting a home scene of 1930 during which a family group received pictures of a prize fight scene and of Col. Lindbergh. The action, of course, was imaginary but the picture sending was not. The photographs went on the air through the Rayfoto apparatus invented by Austin G. Cooley."¹ Cooley is today celebrated as… Read More

Philadelphia: Published by Thomas Bradford, Printer Book-Seller & Stationer, No. 8, South Front-Street, 1796. 44pp. 8vo. Pamphlet. Neatly removed; foxing to initial leaves; Very Good. Philadelphia printing, also printed in Boston and New York, and first printed in Philadelphia in 1795. "The unfavorable terms of the Jay Treaty, leaked prior to its ratification by the Senate, created a public furor. After the South Carolina legislature condemned it. Harper, a congressman from that state, explained in this address to his constituents why he approved of the treaty. He defended Jay's character and conduct, which had been maligned, and argued that Jay's appointment as Minister Plenipotentiary, even though he was Chief Justice, was constitutional. Although he agreed that the treaty did not embody all U.S. demands, he held it an aPpropriate diplomatic compromise and a measure for peace. "-Sheidley. Evans 30540. Sabin 30424. Description:
Allegheny, PA. [Pennsylvania]: Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, 1899. 7 x 5 inches. 16pp., self-titled wraps, stapled binding. Near fine condition with mild corner crease to title-leaf and additional leaves. A rare and ephemeral survival, a nineteenth-century religious tract issued by the Jehovah's Witnesses in 1899. It is noted, perhaps optimistically, on p.[(2)] that of these various tracts "...hundreds of thousands are being circulated" -regardless, few of these tracts survive today, given their modest and somewhat fragile nature. From p.[(3)] the anonymous author(s) write: "Our text points to the close of the Gospel age, and not only tell us that the Lord will not gather his jewels sooner, but implies also that the only class to be gathered at that time will be the jewel class-he comes to make [sic? "take"?] up his jewels." Throughout, the tract uses many terms that would be familiar to a lapidary and extensively uses these terms as metaphor. The text even describes the Lord as "...the great… Read More

[Scotland? early to mid-19th century]. Both measure approx. 7 x 9½ inches. Gouache on board. Both gouaches are signed verso in pencil: J. Ewbank. Additionally, the second image has these three names in pencil, in another hand: Leonard Eldridge, Albert Charles, Greiner Haas. First painting with small corner loss; second with small corner break to lower right; good strong images. English painter John Wilson Ewbank, R.S.A. (1779-1847) was working at his zenith in Edinburgh in 1823 but fell into impoverishment due to alcoholism. ODNB: "His reputation, however, was chiefly established by his small-scale marine paintings, which reflected the influence of Dutch seventeenth-century artists, such as Willem Van de Velde, and he was considered one of the foremost marine artists of this period... to defray the expense of a meal it was frequently necessary for him to throw off some hasty sketch from recollection, and sell it for anything obtainable at the moment."
