Description:
New York: St Martins Press. New in New dust jacket. 1998. First Edition. Hardcover. This previously unpublished tale by Aldous Huxley and Christopher Isherwood, two of the greatest storytellers of the 20th century, uses tight, vivid and seamlessly crafted prose to show the dangers that a magical gift will undoubtedly bring to even the sincerest of characters. In this story, Jacob Ericson is a shy, enigmatic and somewhat inept ranch hand who works for crochety Professor Carter and his crippled daughter, Sharon, on a ranch in the 1920s. One day he finds that his hands possess the mysterious gift of healing, a gift he uses to cure animals. Sharon then persuades him to heal her. From there his powers become slowly more exploited until he is recruited to heal an ailing young millionaire. It is then that he finds the love and security for which he has worked so hard begins to collapse. A wonderful fable. ; 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall .

Description:
New York, NY: Random House. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1961. First Edition. Hardcover. This is a book written through the long-standing calm and historic Minaguchi-ya, an inconspicuous rural inn. Oliver Statler spent several years in Japan, came to love it, and considered this inn it's most historic place of calm and beauty, stubbornly holding on to the old ways of Japan. This is a book of the social history of Japan through 400 years, closely researched with many interviews. It is enhanced by 50 prints, many of them Hiroshige (including the jacket) . The page tops are stained blue. The jacket has minor repaired tears at the top (less than 1/8") but is chipped at the top spine end, and lightly worn at the bottom. The spine is sunned, but when removed from the book and opened, the entire print of the jacket becomes visible, and is in a protective cover. Price clipped. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall .

Description:
Amherst, MA: Univ Of Massachusetts Pr. New in New dust jacket. 1993. First Edition. Hardcover. Best known for his experimental novel 'Cane', Jean Toomer (1894-1967) is associated with the flowering of the Harlem Renaissance in the early 1920s as well as the postwar movement known as the Lost Generation. But Toomer was an enigmatic writer with a mystical vision of life. He followed his own path, which led him on a lifelong quest for spiritual truth. This book provides the first comprehensive survey of Toome's writings, including many unpublished works. Critiquing the subjective idealism that lies at the center of Toomer's oeuvre through the lens of Lukacs's theory of reification, Robert B. Jones frames his analysis in terms of Kierkegaard's stages of development - the aesthetic, the ethical, and the religious. The result is a thoughtful, well-written study that casts new light on Toomer's literary and intellectual development from a variety of critical…
