John Murray, London, 1845, 184pp. bound in recent half red calf, 'Journal of a Residence Among the Negroes in the West Indies' by Matthew Gregory Lewis, published in 1845. Lewis owned a considerable property in Jamaica. 'Philip Musgrave; or, Memoirs of a Church of England Missionary in the North American Colonies' edited by Reverend J Abbott, published in 1846. This work is a collection of vaguely fictionalized thoughts and anecdotes about his time in the North-American colonies as a missionary for the Church of England. Matthew Lewis was a novelist best known for his Gothic novel 'The Monk'. Joseph Abbott was a Church of England clergyman and author, who was also well known for his work 'Memoranda of a Settler in Lower Canada'.

The earliest of the series of so-called 'surreptitious' accounts of Cook's voyages, this published anonymously less than three months after the Endeavour returned and two years before Hawkesworth's official account of the voyage. The dedication leaf printed separately from the rest of the text, to the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Banks and Dr. Daniel Solander, implied their approval and gave this work the appearance of authority.
