An attractive, largely unopened copy in a very worn slipcase.||Robert Surtees began writing about the inimitable sporting hero John Jorrocks – a cockney grocer with a penchant for fox hunting – in the early 1830s and first published this collection of tales relating to Jorrocks’s adventures in 1838. New York: William Edwin Rudge, 1923. One of 510 copies, this no. 510. Carlyle’s essay on the abbot of St Edmond’s Abbey, based upon Jocelin’s medieval chronicle. Set in Monotype Caslon and printed by Bruce Rogers at the press of William Edwin Rudge. 12mo., a largely unopened copy in the original black cloth, blind stamped upper cover, gilt lettering to spine. With one side of the slipcase only with the paper label, the book itself is very good.|||

Newtown: Gregynog Press, 1933. 11 wood engravings by Blair Hughes-Stanton, printed in Gill Perpetua type on japanese vellum. One of 235 ordinary copies, this no.31. Tall 8vo., original red Hermitage calf blocked in blind on upper cover with the figure of Euphrosyne by Hughes-Stanton, fore and lower edges uncut. Some rubbing to the edges of the boards and spine, very slight bowing to the upper board, otherwise an unusually bright copy.||Once again, Hughes-Stanton provides stunning images for the Press and the binding is a very successful one, using one of his images in blind on the upper cover.The weakness of the Welsh calf has caused considerable wear and fading to most copies of this book but this copy seems to have stood up pretty well.|

Woodbridge: Jeremy Greenwood, 2020. One of 200 copies. Portrait frontispiece of Nash at work, 30 illustrations of engravings and drawings by John Nash. Printed in Berghold Sabon on Lambeth Drawing Cartridge paper. Folio, original red cloth with printed paper label on upper boards, spine titled in gilt. As new.||Greenwood published ‘The wood engravings of John Nash’ in 1987 and this book takes the form of an elaborate addendum, inspired by the discovery of two new prints. Greenwood took the opportunity to reproduce these along with a number of superb and rare preparatory drawings from John Nash’s estate which give a good idea of Nash’s working methods.|

Title page, 25 sheets of specimens displaying complete alphabets of all sizes of type and a colophon, all printed on white machine catridge paper. The first specimen sheet shows the three sizes of cast metal type that were produced from Johnston’s design, and is printed from original foundry type cast by the Steven Shanks Foundry., the remaining 24 specimens show wood type from 5-line pica to 24-line pica and are printed from the original wood. With a presentation inscription from Mitchell’s sister: ‘From the Author’s sister to Miss Hall, with warmest wishes for her welfare’.Between 1831 and 1848, Mitchell made four major expeditions into the Australian interior. Mitchell's final, year long expedition sought to solve once and for all the question of the drainage of North-Eastern Australia. He set out in December 1845 with Edmund Kennedy as second in command and proceeded north into tropical Queensland. He had hoped the Barcoo River (what he called the Victoria) would lead all the way to the Gulf of Carpentaria and thereby provide an overland route between Sydney and Port Essington on the Gulf of Carpentaria. Monmouthshire: Old Stile Press, 2000. Wood engravings and an afterword by Angela Lemaire. No. 8 of 220 copies, signed by the artist. Set in Van Dijck and printed on Zerkall mould-made paper. Apart from the second colour on the colophon and title pages, three different black inks were used in the printing of the book. Pp. 38 [6]. 4to., bound by The Fine Bindery in original illustrated green paper boards, lettering in gilt to spine, fore and lower edges uncut and housed in the original blue slipcase with 4 wood engravings pasted to one side. A handsome copy, very slightly faded at spine.||Lemaire engraved the blocks in the text especially for an edition of ‘Thomas the Rhymer’ and the engravings, depicting the seasons, that appear throughout the afterword were originally created for a calendar, which was never printed.
