New York, 1995, B & N books, reprint edition, hard bound in dj, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, FINE/FINE CONDITION, 238 pages, illus, bibliog., index. ----------------------------------------------JACKBOOT: A HISTORY OF THE GERMAN SOLDIER 1713-1945 traces the background and influences that shaped the character of the German soldier from the time of Frederick the Great to the end of the Second World War. ------------------------Frederick the Great was the man who made Prussia into a strong military nation, who trained and built up an immensely powerful army without equal in Europe. He was also the man Hitler most wanted to emulate. The ability of Frederick's army to recover and hit back in the face of tremendous odds is one of the chief qualities inherited by the German army and one which, as at Amiens in 1918 and at the Ardennes in 1945, has been demonstrated again and again. ---------------------------------------------Laffin provides an illuminating account of the attitude of the ind ... Phoenix Mill, 1999, Sutton, UK first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6x9, xvii, 269 pp, illus, notes, bibliog, index. -------------------------------------------------------The Jacobite story is more than the tale of Bonnie Prince Charlie, his unlucky father and grandfather, and a handful of battles - the Boyne, Sheriffmuir, Preston, Prestonpans, Falkirk and Culloden. It is also one of history's longest-running spy sagas, the story of the dark underbelly of the Jacobite years, of spies and counter-spies, treachery and manipulation. The Jacobite Movement began with the Glorious Revolution of 1688 when James II of England and VII of Scotland fled and his daughter, Mary, and her husband, William of Orange, took over the thrones. It ended in 1788 with the death of Prince Charlie who ruled as `King over the Water'. Although destroyed several times - in the defeats of the risings of 1715, 1719 and 1745, and with the wrecking of several invasion attempts by France and Spain - in an intel ... Read more

Schiffer 1992, Fine/Fine condition, hard bound w/dj, 6x9, 230 pages, illustrated, appendices. -------------------------------------Formed in August 1944, Jagdgeschwader 7 was equipped with the revolutionary Me 262 jet fighter, which was faster than any aircraft in existence at the time. This unit experienced all of the highs and lows associated with the introduction of such a radically new design. Thus the history of JG 7 is also the story of the Me 262, and inspired design which broke new ground in many areas of technology, and for which there was simply not enough time for thorough development. The pilots of JG 7 frequently had to make do with improvisation and faced a numerically far super ior enemy in an aircraft which was technically immature. ----------------------------------Manfred Boehme has collected many documentary sources including first hand accounts, technical records and photo archives - many of the 150 photos are published here for the first time.

JOCK LEWES : Co-Founder of the SAS

Lewes, John. w/ a foreword by the Rt Hon the Earl Jellicoe

2000, London Leo Cooper, VG condition, paper edition, 6x9, xix, 266 pages, illus, bibliog, index. -------------------------------------------Credit for the formation in 1941 of the Special Air Service, today the World's most respected special force unit, has traditionally been given to David Stirling. This, as those `in the know' acknowledge, is only part of the truth. Jock Lewes, a young Welsh Guards officer, was at least equally responsible and yet, until now, his character and contribution have never been closely studied. Drawing on hitherto unpublished personal journals, this account of Lewes's life, tragically cut short on 31 December 1941 during a SAS deep penetration patrol, makes for compelling reading. Brought up in the Australian outback where he learnt self-discipline and self-reliance, he went on to have a brilliant career at Oxford University; as President of the Boat Club he was instrumental in the dramatic 1937 victory against Cambridge. Thereafter he spent ti ... Read more

Although he made enemies among America's political elites, his actions in British waters during the Revolution earned him an international reputation which persists to this day. During his engagement with Serapis, Jones uttered, according to the later recollection of his First Lieutenant, the legendary reply to a quip about surrender from the British captain: "I have not yet begun to fight!"

While his father and mother remained loyal to the Union, Wood himself resigned his commission at the U.S. Naval Academy and received a lieutenant's commission in the Confederate navy. He was best known for his raids against enemy ships. In one three-week period, he captured over thirty Union merchant vessels off the north Atlantic coast. Between raids he served on President Davis's staff, and was captured with Davis in May 1865. He escaped, made his way to Cuba, and eventually settled in Nova Scotia.

London 1985, Leo Cooper, UK first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6 x 9, VG/VG CONDITION ( light dj scuffing on black cover & is price clipped), xvi, 176 pages, illustrated. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Although, as Birdie Smith points out, the Gurkhas have no objection if their opponents think of them as bloodthirsty little brown men who would lop off your head at the flash of a kukri, the reality is somewhat different. And as it is apparent that, in the years since a regular Gurkha battalion has been stationed in England, they have won the 'hearts and minds' of the British just as they have won those of the Malayans or the tribesmen of North Borneo, it is high time that their friends had access to a reliable account of what a Gurkha is and what makes him tick. ------------------------------------------------------------------------This is what Birdie Smith has set out to provide and, having served with the Gurkhas for ... JOURNAL OF THE WATERLOO CAMPAIGN

Mercer, Cavalie, General

New York, 1995, Da Capo, US paper edition, r/p of 1927 ed, 5 1/4 x 8 1/4, VG CONDITION, xx, 398 pages., end paper maps. ---------------------------------------------------------------- A reprint of this excellent account by a British officer who commanded G Troop, Royal Horse Artillery during the Waterloo campaign of 1815. Journal of the Waterloo Campaign remains one of the most famous personal accounts of the climactic three days which ended the military career and empire of Napoleon Bonaparte. Captain Cavalie Mercer (1783-1868), commander of G Troop of the Royal Horse Artillery in Wellington's army, was a skilled writer who recorded the day's events each evening. As a result, readers can experience through Mercer's keen eye the turbulence and graphic immediacy of the entire campaign: the news of Napoleon's return from Elba; the landing of Wellington's forces in Belgium; the lulls and hard marching; the battle at Quatre Bras (where Mercer fired a few rounds at N ...
