Decorative endpapers, frontispiece, illustrated throughout, 325 pages with advertising for other books by the author at end. Condition of binding: Wear, especially to spine (backstrip); short tears/chips; corners showing; some discoloration; age toned. Internally: Short crack to first hinge; scattered signs of old humidity/foxing stains; some wear/chips to extremities of pages; several signatures bumped, signatures "shaken" (pulling away from binding cords); lightly age toned, edges age darken; else overall Fair condition. Condition: Former owner's name written on top cover; lightly age toned; else overall Very Good. This is a scarce pamphlet regarding the Jackson Friendly Home in Jackson, Michigan. In January 1878, a group of citizens decided a home for elderly women was needed in Jackson. It was established as the Home for the Friendless, which began in a two-room house on Oak Hill Ave. At the time, it cared for two residents. In June 1908, the home was renamed The Jackson Friendly Home. In 1929, the present home on North St. cared for 43 residents. This brief, but comprehensive pamphlet addresses the early officers/board members, their mission, the financial details, the endowment fund, bequests, and memorial rooms. Japan: Gyouken, 1981. [April 1981] Hardcover and dustjacket, white binding with gold lettering. White dustjacket. Text entirely in Japanese, not English or an English translation. Book inscribed and signed by Ganri Yamashita, presented to Maurice F. Weisner. Yamashita was state minister for defense and protégé of prime-minister Kakuei Tanaka. He was elected to the House of Representatives 10 times during the Liberal Democratic Party's 38-year rule. Weisner was a United States four-star admiral who served as vice chief of Naval Operations from 1972 to 1973; commander in chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet from 1973to 1976; and commander in chief, United States Pacific Command from 1976 to 1979. During World War II, Weisner is credited with the sinking of a Japanese destroyer escort.
