Copy 314 of a limited edition of 950, a very early publication by Peter Pauper Press.In grey printed hard cover with subtle beige stems and flowers on both boards, Some fading, especially to the spine which also has torn edge at the top of the spine. Protected in a cleam, mylar sleeve. Inside, impeccably clean and tight. No former owner marks, no stains or browning. The six page introduction by Tinker celebrates the intense stydy by Hearn of Japanese culture and literature. This is a prize. .

Fine red cloth with a fine dust jacket with the slightest wrinkle along the top. This is the American first edition, but it was printed in England and is identical to the UK first. The less famous brother, jJohn apprenticed with Thomas Bewick , then moved to London. The book includes a thorough, annotated catalogue of John's illustrations and designs. The Bewick brothers remain an inspiration to wood engravers. .

But also chapters and lots of photos of the Jordan Valley, Amman, Mountains of Moab, Petra, the desert and its Castles, Aqaba, and Jerash. London: John Murray, 1816. Book. Illus. by 18 Etched or Aquatint Plates. Near Fine. 3/4 Leather. First Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Young author James was a student of Christ Church, Oxford when it took this trip. It is studiously observant, but still a good read. A majority of the plates are of Russia. The travel reference, Abbey Travel 16, states that the plates in most copies were uncolored, as they are in this copy. Pages xii, 527. Tan morocco with sympathetic, handmarbled boards in tan/brown/terra cotta/mustard. I would estimate this rebinding to be 40 or 50 years old, with gilt lines flanking raised bands on the spine, and a bright red title label with gilt letters. Inside, some minor foxing and stains, and offsetting from the plates as is unfortunately usual. An handsome copy, image available on request. Scarce in the first edition, with later 1817 and 1819 2 volume editions in smaller format (8 vo) and fewer illustrations..

This copy has some edgewear, but is clean & tight, with all plates complete. Illustrated by 26 plates, folding map. A very nice copy of the second edition..

An intrepid women's travels in the mid 19th Century when travel there was a rugged challenge, originally a paperback in Putnam's Library for Travellers and the Fireside. Newly bound in Red Cloth with a blacck title label on the front and fresh gilt lettering. The binding is fine, with no edge wear. Inside, no prior owner marks. The original paperback cover is bound in. Occasional stains but the paper is not browned. .

London: Cullen and Co. , 1795. Book. Very Good. 3/4 Leather. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Original boards covered with well rubbed marbled paper. More recent 20th Century brown leather spine and corners in very good plus condition. Inside the title page and next four pages are covered in a preservative coating, as are the last 4 pages, an appendix. Pages xvii, 76, 136, 181, 9. The text takes the form of letters to his son. Campbell, who formerly commanded a regiment of cavalry in the Service of the Nabob of the Carnatic (in India). His travels took him through Germany to Venice in part one; Alexandria, Aleppo to Mosul in part two, then to Baghdad, Basra, Bombay, shipwreck and capture by Hyder Ali, Candapore, Travanare, Madras and Bengal. .

Schuver was a Dutch explorer, who went south from Cairo in 1880, seeking a new route to East Africa. The Mahdist revolt in Sudan forced him into the hills of the upper Blue Nile and the Eastern watershed of the White Nile. At the middle of 1883 he took a steamer up the White Nile. Ignoring advice not to travel further overland, he was murdered just a few days into western Dinka trbal country. An edited German edition was published in 1883, but the family provided the original manuscripts to the editors, Wendy James, Gerd Baumann and Douglas Johnson. This is the first editio in English, and a much fuller account, also drawing on Schuver letters and manuscripts, than the first German account. Several interesting appendices and an admirable 15 page bibliography. Slight rubs to the dustjacket, but no tears, protected in a clear, mylar sleeve..
