Edward Lear (1812-88) travelled extensively and achieved fame as a lithographer, landscape artist, author and illustrator of numerous travel books. He is now remembered, however, for his five volumes of nonsense poetry and prose. Major John Edward Durrant Shaw (1894 1952), became High Sheriff of Yorkshire from 1939 to 1940.
