Original copyright is 1906, most likely a serialization in one of Street & Smith's many magazine formats. Volume number 14, which is the highest number advertised. This copy with the normal wrinkling to the spine, but otherwise just light wear and rubbing. No binding splits; no stains. Paper lightly toned but not brittle. A clean, tight, unmarked copy.

Boston: Lothrop, Lee & Shepard, 1906. Hardcover. Very Good-/No Jacket. Picknell, G. W.. Bound in pale gray cloth with titles and decorations in green, black, brown and gilt. With six illustrations on coated paper by G. W. Picknell, all present. Early printing, with the latest title in the ads at the rear ("Dan Monroe" by W. O. Stoddard) published in 1905 and the heel logo in script. There is a common misconception that the month/year slug on the copyright page was only used for the first editions of L, L & S books, but it has been demonstrated many times that this slug was rarely if ever removed for later printings, and many printings done as late as the 1920s retain this information. L, L & S never indicated reprints so one must use the ads and the cover variations to determine approximate printing dates. This copy has mild edgewear and soil, with light corner and heel bumps. Spine titles in black only. 258 pages with three pages of publisher's ads at the rear. With a frontispiece and three internal illustrations on coated paper by Bert Salg, all present. Volume 11 in the Jerry Todd series, issued in early 1932, prior to the large number of format changes that G&D put into effect in May of that year. This copy is in the series' first format: blank endpapers and yellow-gold lettering to the front cover. Ads at the rear list books by Leo Edwards, the same list that appears on the rear panel of the dust wrapper (see photos), Pee-Wee Harris through "Turns Detective" (1930), and a list of Buddy Books for Boys, a series that G&D dropped in May of 1932 (another good indication that this copy was an early issue; this ad would not appear after the format change). Bound pale beige cloth with titles and decorations stamped in red and blue. First edition, with corresponding 1899 dates to the title and copyright pages. The author's box lists only two titles, with this one second. 428 pages. Eight illustrations by Frank Schoonover, all present. Note: This was young Schoonover's first book illustrating assignment (he was just 22); he was still at Howard Pyle's school when he received this commision. The tissue guard at the frontispiece is still present. The cloth shows only a touch of edgewear, with just a hint of foxing to the spine and darkish rub mark to the rear cover. Hinges solid; binding square. A clean, tight, unmarked copy. Tomlinson's second book for Houghton; Schoonover's first commission for illustrations.

Signed and inscribed by the author to Major J. P. Westerfield at San Francisco, 1945. Below the inscription Westerfield has printed "Dinner at the Van Sicklin's / 5 Sept. 1945. Westerfield's signature also appears on the frontispiece verso and the title page. The cloth shows mild edgewear with faint fraying at the head and heel of the spine. The jacket, now in mylar, is edgeworn and torn, with chips at the corners and top edge of the front panel; it also lacks the top 1/3 of the spine. Hinges solid; text clean and unmarked.
