A vintage Robert Venturi collection of essays, letters, reports, manifestos, polemical texts offering his always candid views on the state of the architectural profession. In this, his latest offering, Venturi, with all hi usual grace and wit, "argues for a generic architecture defined by iconograph and electronics, an architecture that has used meaning as shelter and symbol. It is a call to architecture to recover its lost soul.

BURGES, William, and Adolphe-Napoleon Didron. ICONOGRAPHIE DES CHAPITEAUX DU PALAIS DUCALE A VENISE. Paris: Victor Didron, 1857. Small 4to. Publisher's wrappers. 58, (2) pages, engraved plates. The earliest fully-fledged publication by William Burges. Iconography was to play a very important part in his architectural oeuvre - both ecclesiastical secular. This ephemeral work launched Burges as an architectural scholar. I sheds considerable light on his aesthetic ideals during his formative years. After studying the Doge's Palace in Venice he paid a visit to the young Paris gothic revivalist Adolphe-Napoleon Didron. Didron made a similar study of th Doge's Palace and agreed to publish Burges study with the proviso that his ow notes on the Doge's Palace be included, along with illustrations. Some smudging, portfolio worn; tex and plates very good.

Rare item with only a handful of copies recorded on OCLC -- mainly in Britain and Australia. Only five American libraries own any volumes. A series of sketches to illustrate churches, monastic ruins, etc. with short descriptions the subjects published by the Ilam Anastatic Drawing Society located in Derbyshire. It was begun in 1860 and published until 1873. The first eleven volumes were edited by George Richard MacKarness, Bishop of Argyle and the Isles. According to the preface: "This Society was established in the year 1859, at Ilam, in the County of Stafford, for the purpose of collecting amate drawings in pen and ink, from all parts of the kingdom, to be printed in an annual volume."
