Chelsea: Ashendene Press; St. John Hornby, 1922. 8vo. 53 woodcuts by J. B. Swain after C. M. Gere, initial letters designed by Graily Hewitt, printed in red and black, sheets untrimmed. Original vellum, gilt-lettered on spine, with silk green ties. Housed in cloth chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. One of 240 copies on paper, of which 200 were for sale (an additional 12 copies were printed on vellum). The last book in Italian published by the press, and the last with contributions by Charles Gere. Franklin calls this and the Vita di Santa Chirara the "Cinderellas among Ashendene Books" (Franklin, p. 138). Ashendene Press XXXI ("It contains 53 illustrations (not 54, as wrongly stated both in the Prospectus and the Hand-List of 1925"); Franklin, p. 240. Provenance: Charles C. First edition, signed by Kris Martin (and Wim Goes with monograph?) on the front free endpaper. Describes the building of the Idiot Chapel. On the left-hand page of most openings is a description of a part of the chapel (e.g. "Stone 3rd row") and positions or numbers of material parts (e.g. "1/28"). On the right-hand page of most openings are line drawings of materials. The last pages of the book have line drawings of the finished structure. Colophon states: "Idiot Chapel", Kris Martin, 2010. Natural stone, wood, Dimensions vary with installation". Idiot Chapel is the result of a collaboration between Belgian artist Kris Martin and architect Wim Goes. Conceptual kit for constructing the Idiot Chapel: a reversed concrete funnel. Every element of the chapel is illustrated, starting with the floor and ending with the top of the building.

Original wrappers with an etching by Moore mounted on front cover; slipcase. A fine copy. FIRST EDITION, number 50 of 90 copies signed by the illustrator. The Australian artist Neil Moore started his career as an etcher, and continued etching and painting after he moved to Italy in 1988. He typically does his own printing, but the etchings for this book were executed by Anna Zilotto. Moore's illustrations to this military epic are densely rendered, imbued with action and a Dürer-esque handling of line and shading. The illustration at left captures a moment of battle in medias res, the spears entering and leaving the frame of the image. Moore captures a dramatic interstitial moment between life to death, a vivid portrayal of the fallen and falling. A fine 18th century edition of Gionta's famous work on the history of Mantua, first published in Verona in 1570 and reprinted in many editions for centuries. The present is the second of two important Mantuan editions, revised and expanded by Federigo Amadei (b. 1684). An 18th century owner has added one page of manuscript notes at end on Mantuan events from 1796.

Errata leaf at end. Contemporary Paduan red morocco, richly gilt, the arms of Padua at center of each side, a wide gilt floral border, spine gilt, black morocco lettering-piece, edges gilt. A major source, often cited, of bio-bibliographical information on the most famous citizens of Padua, framed around an exegesis of the statues surrounding the Prato della Valle. The two parts of the book divide the exterior ring (containing 44 statues) from the interior ring (containing a further 44 statues and obelisks). The square became the property of the city of Padua in 1767, having formerly belonged to the monks of Santa Giustina.
