Memoirs of a friendship.Loosely inesrted is an Autograph Letter Signed by the author and dated 2/4/37: about 180 words of commiseration to Daisy Kennedy after the death of her husband, the poet and playwright John Drinkwater. After Rueff's signature Kennedy has made the note, ''(who later wrote Sarah Bernhardt, in Rivermead Court)''. Rivermead Court was also the address of the Drinkwaters.Letter: folded once; fine. Book: small spot to top edge; fore-edge faintly spotted; very good in good, slightly marked dustwrapper rubbed, chipped and nicked at the edges.

Fleet Publishing, New York., 1965. First edition. Octavo. 192 pages. Three short novels on the theme of love gone bad, much of which is no doubt inspired by the author's own eight marriages. He is probably best known as a great jazz clarinettist and bandleader.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed by him on the front free endpaper: ''To Nanette - Chin up & never fear - Best wishes, Artie Shaw''. The recipient is the actress Nanette Newman who was married to the film director Bryan Forbes. Artie Shaw was co-founder of Artixo Productions, the American distributors for Forbes' 1964 film Seance on a Wet Afternoon in which Nanette Newman appeared.Very good indeed in very good indeed, slightly nicked and marked dustwrapper with a later price sticker on the front flap.

Baudry, Paris., 1827. Third Baudry edition. Published in the same year as the first Milan edition. Small octavo. Three volumes: pp [vi], 303; [vi], 319; [vi], 362. Period French binding of full calf elaborately decorated in gilt and in blind, raised bands, marbled edges and endpapers. The most celebrated of Italian novels was an immediate success with no fewer than nine editions appearing from as many publishers in the first year of publication. A number of these were piracies. It was translated into English a year later. This Italian language Paris edition was reprinted several times. Contemporary (1828) ownership signature on the first blank of each volume. Covers and prelims affected by damp at lower edge. The lower margins of the first forty pages of Vol. III have been similarly affected. An attractive set nevertheless.

This collection contains a "lost world" story The Great Quest. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Feb, 11 1937 - To Savaran's God-father, W.A. Williamson - with all best wishes - Douglas Newton''.Top corners of upper cover a little faded. Prelims lightly spotted. Very good in good, chipped pictorial dustwrapper with a thin stain running down the spine.

Loosely inserted is a Typed Letter Signed by author, dated November 4, 1929, and on the headed writing paper of The New Republic magazine, of which he was an editor: about 80 words to Victor Schultz of The Des Moines Register thanking him for his review (''...it was one of the only reviews to I have read which seemed to have any real idea of what the book was about. I think, however, there is, perhaps, quite a lot to be said for the point of view of the writer who expresses a contrary opinion in another column of your literary page.''). Wilson has made a few ink amendments to the letter.Letter: tiny tear to centre of page; folded once; very good. Book: small ownership signature (not Schultz's) on front free endpaper; endpapers tanned; rear free endpaper marked with traces of label; head and tail of spine scuffed; no dustwrapper; good only.

A verse drama.The play was written in 1927, but the author gained recognition in the English-speaking world only in 1931 when his plane disappeared after he had scattered anti-fascist leaflets over Rome. His plane was capable of 150 mph, whereas the 900 planes of the Italian air force could fly at 300 mph. He left behind a testament, published in English as The Story of my Death, which indicated that he knew that he was flying to his death. This was obviously a theme with which he was preoccupied.One corner slightly rubbed. Very good indeed in good dustwrapper nicked, rubbed and chipped at the edges, defective at the head of the spine and with a long closed tear at inner edge of top panel.

A collection of articles from various literary periodicals.Loosely inserted is an Autograph Letter Signed by the author, on his Eastbourne headed writing paper and dated Dec. 9th [1973]: about 90 words to a Miss Pearson, who seems to have been involved in the education of Connolly's daughter Cressida, and largely regarding forthcoming exams (''I suppose, since Cressida will be less than one month over 13 when she takes the examination one couldn't get her off the German paper?'').
