Description:
London: Henry Colburn, 1828. First Edition. Very good. Vol. I: xix [1], 591 [1] pp.; Vol. II: viii, 730 pp. (lacking Colburn's 2-page ads). With 11 (of 13) plates after original artwork by Lady Emily Elizabeth Swinburne Ward, 5 of which are folded (8 aquatints of which one is hand colored, and 3 lithographs), 5 wood-engraved text illustrations, 1 folded engraved map (of 2 - see plate and map list below) with repairs, tables in text. 2 vols., 8vo (216 x 130 mm), modern half calf over marbled boards, smooth spines, red morocco labels. Text, plates, and maps in excellent condition. With stated defects, and priced accordingly. First edition of this "classic book on Mexico" (Streeter). The exquisite plates were created from the original art work of the author's wife, Lady Emily Elizabeth Swinburne Ward (1798-1882). A near-contemporary review states that Ward's is "The most systematic and complete work of which we are in possession respecting Mexico." Description:
Washington DC: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1915. First Edition. 4to (260 x 195 mm). Frontispiece portrait of the collector, 329 pp. Text with some foxing. Bound in original quarter morocco (head of spine chipped), top edge gilt. NOT EX-LIBRARY. Catalogue of incunabula from the John Boyd Thatcher collection, deposited with the Library of Congress in 1910. The catalogue is groundbreaking on account of the copy-specific descriptions of BINDINGS and PROVENANCE, which were almost never recorded in incunabula catalogues at this early date. With a long biographical sketch of the collector. ¶ From the famed bibliographical library of B.H. Breslauer (sale of the Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslauerana, Third Portion, 2005, lot 1300).

Original cloth, title gilt on upper cover, corners bumped, some minor soiling, front and back endpapers a little browned, t.e.g., others untrimmed. COPY NUMBER TWO OF 20 COPIES, reprinted from vol. Beattie was Keeper of Printed Books at the National Library of Scotland (1931-1953) and then Librarian (1953-1970). He was the author of the First and Second "Supplement to the Hand-List of Incunabula in the National Library of Scotland." In 1986-88 the NLS acquired his collection of bibliography and bibliographical papers (now "William Beattie Collection"). Description:
Austin, TX: [Harry Ransom] Humanities Research Center, 1974. First Edition, Second Impression, limited to 250 copies. Near Fine. 8vo. 29 pp. Title-page printed in black and orange. Original burnt-orange colored boards, original clear protective wrapper. NOT ex-library! A very useful and very readable account of the evidence -- and lack thereof -- supporting the argument that Johann Gutenberg was effectively the first "modern" printer in the West. Goff writes with authority, having been compiler of the indispensable "Third Census" of Incunabula in American Libraries. It is instructive to recall that by the end of the 15th century, "printing had been introduced into no less than 238 European communities and more than 1100 individual printers are known to have been operating these equally numerous presses during this 39-year interval" (p. 21). ¶ Designed by William R. Holman, this is one of 250 copies according to the colophon.

Paris: Bibliotheque nationale de France, 1992. First Edition. Very good. 5 vols., 4to. Original wrappers (spines of Fasc. "H-L" and "M-O" a little faded with unimportant wear along joints). "Additions et Corrections" 16 ff. (ca. 250 entries), stapled as issued. WITH: 2 ff. half-title and title-page for Tome II, loose as issued. NOT ex-library! The extraordinary, almost heroic catalogue of incunabula in the BnF (CIBN), exhaustively describes ca. 8,000 titles/editions, many of which are unique. As Bernard ("Barney") Rosenthal notes in his critical review of the methodology of CIBN, notes "the sheer mass of incunabula described, the astonishing listing of multiple copies with their provenances and minor variants, the generous doses of well documented information concerning textual contents, the citation of a wide range of scholarly literature beyond the purely bibliographical works and journals, the promptness with which new data are incorporated in the descriptions, the almost fanatical (but unevenly… Read More

Barcelona: Imprenta-Escuela de la Casa Provincial de Caridad, 1945. First Edition. Very good. Small 4to. vi, 130 pp., illustrated. Original printed wrappers (a little worn, some dust-soiling). One of 500 numered copies from a total edition of 1000, this one being No. 160. NOT ex-library! Essential catalogue of 724 incunables, the Catalonian imprints particularly well described, with extensive bibliographic references for each entry, and with numerous illustrations in the text. There is no digital surrogate for this catalogue (or the 1967 Supplement), nor has it been superceeded as we learn from the Bibl. Univ. de Barcelona's own website: "Currently, a large portion of the incunabula collection awaits recataloguing. While this effort will give us definitive figures, we can estimate at present that the collection houses some 830 editions and nearly 1,240 copies.    "Of all the libraries in Spain, the collection of fifteenth-century editions in the Rare Book and Manuscript CRAI Library ranks third… Read More

Special edition, limited to 100 copies (sic) with a preface by H.O. Lange, of the catalogue of 2,562 incunables preserved in the Royal Library of Denmark, Copenhagen. The entries are listed in Hain order (i.a. alphabetical by author), many of which are described in GREAT DETAIL. This particular catalogue is one of the earliest to contain an index of the towns represented, which extends to 102 pages (sic!) for which see below. The original compiler, J.A. Bolling, worked on the catalogue from the 1830s until his death in 1862; according to Victor Madsen, Bolling "had almost completed his work and put down 2,558 incunabula. Description:
Paris: Librairie Thomas-Scheler, 1994. First Edition. Very good. Folio. 50 items described and illustrated. Original wrappers. Price-list loosely inserted as issued. An extraordinary catalogue of 50 incunables which includes many great rarities, i.a. the first edition of Homer in Greek (Florence, 1488 -- Doheny copy). The price-list has been annotated by B.H. Breslauer: the published prices total FF 5,743,000 -- not including 9 items Prix Sur Demande which he estimated to be ca. FF 4,500,000 -- and thus the entire catalogue amounts to more than FF 10,000,000 (an impressive sum in 1994). We have seen other instances whereby B.H. Breslauer added up all the asking prices in a single bookseller's catalogue, not only as a pastime but as an expression of his intense competition, even though he had few rivals. ¶ From the famed Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana (sale at Christie's NY, 2005, lot 1275).

London: Privately Printed and Not For Circulation, 1898. First Edition. Softcover. Fair. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). viii, 64 pp. Softcover, original paper wrappers (chipped and worn, spine defective), detached from textblock. Rare, privately printed catalogue of a collection of 499 Continental incunables formed by Walter A. Copinger. The catalogue is effectively a vehicle of sale. The collection is now at the Free Library of Philadelphia (Copinger-Widener Collection). It is hardly surprising that our copy is the only one on the market. Since 2005, when we purchased it at the famed Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana sale (Third Portion, 28 June 2005, lot 1300), exactly zero copies have appeared at auction. Prior to this date, the only copy on the market was sold at Parke-Bernet in 1957 (this copy?) A passage from Copinger's Introductory Notice is informative: "The Collection of which a handlist is here presented is the result of many years' labour, every part of the Continent having been laid… Read More

This volume is tantamount to a bibliography of Incunabula Reference works, very well described, and featuring a useful 15-page index. The reference library of the august antiquarian bookselling firm of H.P. Kraus was legendary, and was justly considered to be the largest and most important ever formed by an antiquarian bookseller. HPK was a leading purveyor of incunabula, and it could be argued that the incunabula reference books he used were the definitely the ones worth owning.

Description:
Leipzig: Karl W. Hiersemann, 1928. Good. Small 4to. iv, 103, [4] pp. With 35 illustrations in text. 192 incunables described, plus index. Original wrappers (front cover splitting, spine worn and partially defective, covers slightly soiled). NOT ex-library! Who today could even conceive of procuring 192 incunables and offering them in a single bookseller's catalogue? So it went with Hiersemann, a towering figure among purveyors of early printed books. In the present catalogue we find two incunables that were purchased by William Schiede: 53.9 (item 12) = Mentelin's great Biblia Germanica 1466, a superb copy; and 571 / Inv. 125 (item 93) = Sorg's Biblia Germanica 1480. ¶ From the famed Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana (sale at Christies NY, 2005, lot 1275).
