Vienna: A. Strauss, 1824. Bremser, Joannes Gottfried (1767-1827). Icones helminthum systema Rudolphii entozoologicum illustrantes. [4], 12pp. 18 hand-colored engraved plates by Heinrich Mansfeld after Bremser's drawings. Vienna: Anton Strauss, 1824. 387 x 281 mm. Later half cloth, marbled boards, slight wear at corners. Very good copy. First Edition of one of the earliest works on helminthology, the study of parasitic worms. These beautifully executed plates were prepared by the curator of Vienna's Natural History Cabinet and illustrate the specimens in the Cabinet's collection, along with some rare examples from other collections. The plates were intended to illustrate the classification system set forth in the Synopsis entozoorum (1819) of Karl Asmund Rudolphi (1771-1832), who founded the science of helminthology at the turn of the 19th century. The plates include images of nematodes, acanthocephalans, trematoda (flukes), cestoidea (tapeworms) and cystica (taenia). .

Edinburgh, 1820. Abercrombie, John (1780-1844). Autograph letter signed, dated Edinburgh, 20th November 1820, to Dr. Thomas H. Burder (1789-1843). 4pp., including integral address leaf. 251 x 202 mm. Creased where previously folded, light wear along a few folds, light soiling, but very good, preserving Abercrombie's wax seal. Excellent long letter congratulating Burder on the recovery of his health after a four-year illness. Abercrombie was the author of the classic "Pathological and Practical Researches on Diseases of the Brain and the Spinal Cord" (1828; G-M 2285.2), as well as the extremely popular "Inquiries Concerning the Intellectual Powers" (1830). Burder, Abercrombie's correspondent, was a London physician who "suffered from almost constant ill-health" (DNB); his article on "Headache," contributed to the "Cyclopedia of Practical Medicine," was based largely on his own experience. .

1900. Together 2 patents. 3pp., 3 fold. diagrams (19,675); 11pp., 5 fold. diagrams (13,094). 1900-1904. Disbound, some leaves loose. The firm of Felt and Tarrant was founded in 1886 by Dorr Eugene Felt (1862-1930), who invented what he claimed was the first practical key-driven mechanical calculator. The prototype for Felt's machine was his famous "macaroni box" model, completed in 1885, in which Felt worked out the essential design elements of his calculator using a wooden macaroni box for the body, meat skewers for the keys, and rubber bands for the springs. In 1887 Felt patented his machine and began producing and selling it from his manufacturing facility in Chicago, which he financed with capital supplied by his partner, Robert Tarrant. Felt and Tarrant's main product was the Comptometer, introduced in 1890; this was a nonlisting (i.e., nonprinting) machine whose chief advantages were its speed, versatility, and ease of use. The Comptometer rivaled the Burroughs calculators in popularity during…
