Description:
n.p.: n.p., 1964. Patriotic, right-wing doggerel courtesy of Alan McIntosh, the long-time editor/publisher of the Rock County Star-Herald published in Luverne, Minnesota. The poem first appeared as an editorial in 1964 and was reprinted in newspapers across the country. The edition we're offering appears to be the only one separately published, and, based on provenance, was undertaken by members of a Long Island chapter of the John Birch Society. In the poem, McIntosh inveighs against the many anti-American events and people he's "tired of" including "pimply-faced beatniks," "mobs of scabby-faced long-haired youths and short-haired girls," "lazy do-nothings," "clergymen who have made a career out of integration causes, yet send their own children to private schools," "slack-jawed bigots who wrap themselves in bedsheets in the dead of night," "some Negro leaders who, for shock purposes, scream four-letter words in church meetings," "filth-peddlers who have launched Americans in an obscenity race,"… Read More

San Francisco: Wei Min She, 1974. First edition. A document of doctrinal squabbling between two Asian-American Marxist-Leninist groups over the draft of Wei Min She's (WMS) "Asian Contingent Solidarity Statement," which was to be read at a 1974 May Day celebration. According to Wei Min She, IWK was invited to criticize the draft and to participate in reshaping it, but they declined and instead published it in the inaugural issue of their journal. This document outlines the ideological differences between the two groups and their divergent political lines and reflects the endemic conflict among tiny sects of Marxist-Leninists throughout the 1970s. An Appendix includes the documents discussed including 1.) Finalized Asian Contingent Statement presented at ‘74 May Day Rally 2. IWK's Letter, "draft" of Asian Contingent Statement, and IWK's Reply 3. Partial list of contingents in Bay Area May Day Rally of ‘74 and 4. What's Wei Min She. New Orleans: In Arcane Logos, 1969. The inaugural issue of this relatively short-lived underground newspaper published in New Orleans and founded by disaffected staff members of The Word, New Orleans' first underground newspaper. A few dozen issues were published in 1969, but it appears to have dissolved in December of that year. This issue begins with a poem by L. S. Carstater and an essay by counterculture cult leader Mel Lyman, followed by an editorial on In Arcane Logos' inauspicious founding. There is a long article reprinted from the Georgia Straight on "Good Sex," with shorter articles on the right wing's anti-sex ed agenda and on authoritarianism among revolutionary movements. Also included is a centerfold spread of two unattributed art works and Mel Lyman's review of William Buckley Firing Line, in which he debated Norman Mailer. Description:
[New York?]: [Published by the author?], 1966. A defense of the slogan "black power" as an expression of "Negro group solidarity" and "communal self-assertion." Danzig, a Jewish professor at Columbia, discusses the transition from the liberal, interracial civil rights movement to a new phase of militant self-interest. Although he views this change as a positive one, he warns: "A Negro movement based primarily on self-interest is a necessity, but a Negro movement based exclusively on self-interest is doomed to failure." Danzig's paper was published in the September 1966 issue of Commentary magazine and was widely cited and reprinted. We assume this mimeographed copy circulated before the Commentary publication. Corner-stapled, 11" x 8 ½" sheets mimeographed from typescript, 10 p. Fine. This edition not found in OCLC.
