Description:
A description of the special-purpose wartime punched-card calculators originally developed by IBM for the United States Army. . The complete issue, in original printed wrappers. Octavo. Library rubberstamp on front wrapper. Very good. The first two machines of this type, were built during the war for the Aberdeen proving ground, were delivered in December 1944, and were in operation during the last eight months of the war…For comparison with the I.B.M. Sequence Controlled Calculator at Harvard this machine is limited in internal storage capacity, number of significant figures, and flexibility of sequencing; on the other hand, multiplying speed is about twenty times as great."

Guben [Germany] F.Fechner, [n.d., ca. 1840] First edition. Idleness and Industry tells the story of Felix, a lazy and disobedient boy who falls into poverty after the death of his father and must be pulled back from the brink of suicide by his kind, hardworking, and pious friend Robert. Original printed cloth-covered boards with decorative border in blue and gilt on both boards, title on upper board, and an image of a man on lower board. . Small octavo. With 16 color-printed plates. Some rubbing to corners and a bit of toning to edges of boards. Neatly rebacked with blue cloth, endpapers replaced, and inner gutters restored. Plate facing page six is loose and laid in at original position. Still a very good, very bright and clean copy of an uncommon item. Painter and lithographer Jean Victor Adam (1801 – 1867) trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and under the direction of Charles Meynier and Jean-Baptiste Regnault. Adam was commissioned by the Museum at Versailles to paint several pieces, including…

Description:
Glasgow: Printed for Robert Urie, 1767 First Scottish edition, published by Glasgow scholarly publisher, Robert Urie. The London edition, which was the first edition in English, appeared the same year. Contemporary sheep. . Octavo. Hinges cracked, but sound, binding extremities rubbed. Contemporary ink signature of Rev. Henry W. Duchachet on half-title. Bookplate of the Duchachet Library in Philadelphia on front pastedown, old library pocket on back pastedown. A good, clean copy. The Philosophe Ignorant 'was written in a mood of exasperation and disgust produced by the impossibility of resolving the great metaphysical problems. In a series of brief sections Voltaire tries to answer the questions with which he begins: 'Who are you? whence do you come? what are you doing? what will you become? Or rather, he more and more irritably points out how unanswerable they are, and how insignificant is man when confronted with them" (Besterman, Voltaire, p. 488). Though less well-known than his Glasgow neighbors,…
