New York: The Limited Editions Club [printed at The Stinehour Press], 1982. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. Baskin, Leonard. No. 351 of 2000, quarto size, 176 pp., signed by Leonard Baskin, with LEC Monthly Letter. One of the early purveyors of realism in American theatre, Eugene O'Neill (1888-1953) created deeply moving characters, often on the outskirts of society, and examined feelings of disillusionment and despair in his plays; his plays were some of the first to have characters speak in American vernacular (n. b., info from Wikipedia). "The Iceman Cometh" is one such example, with characters desparately clinging to hopes and self-deception among a political backdrop of anarchism and socialism. This publication by The Limited Editions Club contains illustrations by Leonard Baskin (1922-2000), an eminent sculptor, printmaker, graphic artist, and writer; in his pursuit of multiple art forms, he conveys a sense of social consciousness and humanism. His drawings here form stark… Read more

London: Cadenza Press, 1987. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Sixmo size, 20 pp., in a design binding by David Sellars. Design binding by David Sellars, Designer Bookbinder (1949-2015), based out of Great Britain. David was awarded a Fellowship of Designer Bookbinders in the mid seventies and served as President of the society for four years; his bindings are represented in most major libraries in the world and many private collections. This binding is almost in counterpoint to the book itself; for Cobden-Sanderson's essay on "The Book Beautiful" David designed a binding reminiscent of roughly-hewn boards, with small jewel-toned dots in the middle of both boards and on the book's edges, contained within a case of even rougher hew. ___DESCRIPTION: Leather spine with the author's initials lettered in gold in blindstamped circles; textured handmade paper over wooden boards, leather collage stripe on both covers; board and paper edges stained black with impressed colored circles; painted endpapers;… Read more

[San Francisco]: [Robert Grabhorn & Andrew Hoyem for the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco, 1969], 1969. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. One of 150 copies, elephant folio size, 22 pp. A tribute to the incomparable Edwin Grabhorn, who, with his brother Robert, created some of the loveliest of American private press books during the first half of the twentieth century. This tribute was printed for the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco, and the essay by David Magee focuses on the contribution to the Club by the Grabhorns, as well as sharing something of the spirit of the man. "Ed was a modest man. He once described himself to an interviewer as 'just another job printer trying to get by'. Even when the American Institute of Graphic Arts invited him to New York to receive its gold medal, he declined" (from David Magee's essay). Embellished with two tipped-in black and white photographic images (by Marjorie Farquhar) of Edwin Grabhorn at the Press, and eight tipped-in original leaves from various books… Read more

[New York / South Portland, Maine]: The Limited Editions Club [printed at the Shagbark Press], 1987. Limited Edition. Wraps. Fine. Michael Hafftka. No. 351 of 800, quarto size, 56 pp., signed by Michael Hafftka. Franz Kafka (1883-1924) is considered by many to be one of the twentieth century's pre-eminent authors, fusing elements of realism with the fantastic; he is known for his use of an isolated and detached protagonist who is forced to face a bizarre, surreal predicament and has been interpreted as exploring themes of alienation, existential anxiety, guilt, and absurdity (n. b., info from Wikipedia). This work was penned during the course of only two weeks, while Kafka was working on "The Trial", in 1914. Not published until 1919, it, along with much of Kafka's work, did not become widely known until after World War II, when the first translations into English were made.Michael Hafftka, the artist, was born to Holocaust survivors in 1953 and is an American figurative expressionist painter. Description:
London: J.M. Dent & Co, 1907. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good +. Rackham, Arthur. First trade edition with additional Rackham illustrations on enlarged paper, quarto size, 568 pp., in original dust jacket. This book was first published in 1898 with only twelve illustrations, this being the first trade edition of the newly enlarged version of 1907, which had many new illustrations. British illustrator Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is credited with renewing interest in book illustration at a vital moment of advances in printing technology. The subtle colours and thin feral lines were unlike anything that had come before, as if plucked from the fog of a wild imagination, breathing new life into the whole of children's book illustration. The somewhat grotesque quality of Rackham's figures are perfectly suited for the metrical myths, legends, and ghost stories written by Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), an English clergyman who is best known by his pen name Thomas… Read more

Number 147 of 400 numbered copies for sale, square folio size, [164] pp., signed by Wayne Thiebaud, in original publisher's shipping box. "Italo Calvino, regarded by many as the greatest master of Italian fiction in this century, first published this work in 1972 as Le citta invisibili. A tale mixing fantasy, reality, and philosophy, it recounts a long conversation between a young Marco Polo and an aging Kublai Khan. The book was lauded by Gore Vidal as more than a novel, more like a "meditation or poem" and "perhaps his [Calvino's] most beautiful work". William Weaver, who translated it from the Italian into English, considers that among his translations, "it is the one I reread with the most pleasure"... With artwork by Wayne Thiebaud (b. 1920), an American painter associated with the Pop Art movement who is known for (among other things) his urban and landscape paintings, drawing influence from artists like… Read more
