Description:
Edingburgh: Waugh and Innes, 1819. Second edition. Octavo. xiv, [2], 576 pp. Complete with folding map and sixteen full page engraved plates of scenes in Iceland (the map is included in the plate list on the "Instructions to the Binder' but there are two plates of Icelandic costume where the plate list states just one). Rebound for well known dealer/collector John Sinkankas in quarter red calf over marbled boards, gilt spine lettering. Bookplate (Sinkankas), mild toning throughout and with offsetting from plates to text. Small marginal repair to folding plate. A very good copy. This copy signed on the top margin of the title page - "Jane Reynolds, 1820". Quite likely, Jane Reynolds was the wife of poet and humorist Thomas Hood (m. 1824) and sister of poet and playwright John Hamilton Reynolds. "I have spoken of this Journal as the best account that we have of Iceland. No other English traveller has spent so much time on that island, or travelled there so extensively, or enjoyed such advantages for… Read More

Description:
Pasadena, CA: N.p., 1922. This ALS is written by hand in ink on three sheets of paper (rectos only). It is written from Sharp at his Pasadena residence to Cornelius O'Brien of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and dated January 6th of 1922. Two small diagrams drawn in the text. Very legible and in excellent condition. The letter is written by Sharp to a customer of his, a Mr. Cornelius O'Brien, a banker and prominent citizen of Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Mr. O'Brien bought a Sharp painting ("The Chief's Son") and had inquired of Sharp of the proper frame in an earlier letter. Apparently Sharp and O'Brien both bought the same frame and were pleased with them. But the letter then evolves into a mini-history lesson on both Sharp and Native Americans. At the beginning he writes "I generally go to my cabin & studio at foot of Custer Battle Field in the Crow Country, Montana.. but Mrs. Sharp's health is not robust so we came here [1481 Carson St., Pasadena). In April we go to our home- Taos, NM. Most of my pictures are… Read More

Nevada City: Carl Mautz Publishing, 2013. First edition. Tall octavo. xvi, 229, [1] pp. Profusely illustrated. Publisher's brown cloth with gilt spine and cover lettering, pictorial dust jacket. New. One of 25 signed and numbered copies with an original print made from a calotype negative by the author tipped in. "In this volume Hanlon turns conventional photographic history inside out, restoring American photography to its proper place among the great early traditions. Too often the United States is seen as a provincial player in calotype photography; a poor cousin to the Britons who invented the technique and the French who perfected it. In this book, we see early American photography as a vital part of that tradition—creative, dynamic, and influential. Accessibly written and exquisitely researched, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in photography and its origins. In addition to being a great reference work, it dramatically expands our understanding of the field." Phillip… Read More

In 1840 he became curator of the Manchester Museum, where he served for twenty-two years. He wrote several natural history books, a few dealing with conchology. He became a fellow of the Linnean Society, a member of the Wernerian, Kirwanian and Phrenological Societies, and president of the Physical Society. New York: L. H. Mace & Co., 1899. First edition. Quarto. 44 pp. with full page photographic illustrations of baby carriages on all but 4 pages. Publisher' brown wrappers with company name in raised gold lettering and title in white. A bit of edge wear and an old faint tidemark to outer lower corner (about an inch) but a very good copy. One is tempted to think that the excessive coddling of youngsters is a Millennial thing; not so. These carriages are excessively luxurious and with prices to reflect that. Carriage No. 794 is a work of art, very rococo in design and lined with satin and silk, and it is priced a modest $54 (about $1600 in today's dollars). OCLC records no copies.

Oakland: The Camera Club of Oakland, 1942. First edition. Printed broadside on stiff card. 11 x 14 1/4 inches. Slight wear to corners but very good. A broadside announcing a series of twelve lectures on image management to be given in Oakland by the influential photographer Nicholas Haz. Sponsored by The Camera Club of Oakland the lectures were to be held in the Rock Ridge Women's Club. The broadside also bears a wonderful portrait of Haz (surely a self-portrait) and five printed accolades by such renown photographers as Edward Stieglitz, Edward Steichen and Arnold Genthe. "Hungarian-born painter and photographer Nicholas Haz became one of the important teachers of photography in the second quarter of the 20th century. A theorist whose ideas bridged pictorialism and modernism, Haz published two classic texts on photographic technique: Emphasis in Pictures: A First Aid to Composition (Canton, 1937) and Image Management: Composition for Photographers (Cincinnati, 1946). Boston: Impressions Graphic Workshop Inc., 1965. First edition. One of 75 copies (this being #54). Folio (20 1/4 x 26 1/4 inches). Title page and fourteen loose plates by Mazur, all pencil signed and numbered by him. Compete. In the publisher's clamshell case with gilt morocco lettering labels to spine and front. An excellent copy. Artist Michael Mazur first came to public notice in the early 1960s with his series of etchings and lithographs depicting inmates in a mental asylum in Howard, Rhode Island where Mazur volunteered as a hospital aide. “Images from a Locked Ward,” a portfolio of 14 lithographs created with master printer George Lockwood, has been called Mazur’s “first artistic descent into Hell.” This was a theme he later explored while illustrating poet Robert Pinsky’s translation of Dante’s Inferno. ”These lost souls,” John Canaday wrote in The New York Times, “have the terrible anonymity of individuals who cannot be reached, whose ugly physical presence is only the… Read More
