(9.6 x 6.3 inches) Original full flexible vellum covers, with crimson interwoven red silk ties. An attractive manuscript fully written out in caligraph by John Franklin Shipley from a manuscript by noted author, Mary Elizabeth Shipley, in black ink with red initial letters and heightened gold and blue decorations throughout, "In the year of our LORD. 1905," [written on title page]. Title and first word on the first text page are also written in gold. Twenty fine handmade paper leaves (made by O. W. Paper & Arts Co. Ltd, and with their watermark) with untrimmed edges, sixteen with written text. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE ARTIST: "C. M. S from J. F. S, Christmas. AD 1907," written in fountain pen on front blank leaf. Occasional light foxing to vellum, else near fine. A very attractive and pleasing work.

Offered here are two original pieces of cover art studies for The Inlaid Printer, the magazine which Will Bradley contributed so much art and design. 1) 8 1/2 x 12" on card paper, study for "Christmas, November, 1917, for "The Inland Printer" showing a woman in flowing brown coat shopping with her daughter. Border beginning in olive green, the lettering in red, ochre, white, black and greens. The drawing in pencil is unfinished. With notations at top to printer 2) 7 x 7" on the back of a page of magazine, in pencil with white gouache, "November MDCCCII." i.e. misrepresented, and a faint CCCC in pencil below. As well, a small marginalia instruction upper right. With Scarce thus.

First edition, large paper issue. 8vo. 311, 4 (ads); 319 pp. Original quarter light purple cloth over original boards, remnants of paper labels on spine. Very rare in original boards, only a few copies in boards have survived. The Large Paper Edition, completely uncut. With full access to the American consul's massive library of Spanish history in Madrid, Irving began working on the book, and later was invited to stay at the palace of the Duke of Gor, who gave him unfettered access to his library containing many medieval manuscripts which aided in the development of the tale. In a note to the 1850 revised edition, however, he confessed that the Jesuit priest was his own invention. He also admitted romanticizing some of the scenes and incidents of the history, but in this respect he was only doing what the Spaniards had done before.
