(9.6 x 6.3 inches) Original full flexible vellum covers, with crimson interwoven red silk ties. An attractive manuscript fully written out in caligraph by John Franklin Shipley from a manuscript by noted author, Mary Elizabeth Shipley, in black ink with red initial letters and heightened gold and blue decorations throughout, "In the year of our LORD. 1905," [written on title page]. Title and first word on the first text page are also written in gold. Twenty fine handmade paper leaves (made by O. W. Paper & Arts Co. Ltd, and with their watermark) with untrimmed edges, sixteen with written text. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE ARTIST: "C. M. S from J. F. S, Christmas. AD 1907," written in fountain pen on front blank leaf. Occasional light foxing to vellum, else near fine. A very attractive and pleasing work.

London: Day and Son, 1860. Large quarto. The twelve volumes in original pictorial and color wrappers, the first being TEXT and 2-12 containing the vivid color plates. 100 splendid plates in total. Very scarce in parts. Some wear to spines, some slight paper tape mends to bottoms of fragile spines, most having worn partly away, but a complete and ordered set.

Chromolithographed title and half-title, 100 chromolithographed plates printed on thick card paper each with tissue guard providing a thorough overview of the art of illumination from the 6th-16th Centuries. Hinges reinforced, corners very slightly bumped, else near fine copy of what is certainly the most authoritative treatise on this topic from an artistic point of view.

A rare Elkin Mathews title with twoo superb woodcut vignettes and title page design, by Selwyn Image. Owned by two Nineties great collectors and scholars, Simon Nowell-Smith and Mark Samuels Lasner, with each bookplate. Spine sl. worn, else very good. Scarce.

Size of Mat: 16 x 13 3/4 inches. Size of Watercolor Drawing: 7 1/2 by 5 inches, executed by Selwyn Image, noted British Turn of the Century artist, illustrator and designer closely allied to the Arts & Crafts Movement. Watercolor in light brown, darker brown and light gray colors consisting of swirling patterns with four fish at the corners, and one in the center, nail-head spheres, etc. There is a window just below the watercolor showing Imageís description, in his own hand: ìDesign for embroidered cover of the/ Water Babies/ Selwyn Image/1890.î A wonderful original piece of art by Selwyn Image (1849-1930), noted British artist, designer, writer and poet associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement who designed stained-glass windows, furniture, embroidery, and was an illustrator of books. Original beige paper covered boards with famous cover illustration of blossom and vines with innovative lettering motif on both covers by Selwyn Image (signed lower right) considered one of the landmarks of 1890's and Art Nouveau book design. . 261pp. An extremely fine copy, with no signs of wear whatsoever. Truly the 'best' copy imaginable.

Conisborough, 1850. Offered here is a fabulous two-page Indenture and Schedule to purchase land in the Parish of Conisborough and Sprotborough in Central England in 1850 for the Railroad, an area that turned out to be a hub for travel North. A wonderful page expanding to 20 x 28 inches depicts the area, with pink coloration. Printed entirely on vellum.

Offered here are two original pieces of cover art studies for The Inlaid Printer, the magazine which Will Bradley contributed so much art and design. 1) 8 1/2 x 12" on card paper, study for "Christmas, November, 1917, for "The Inland Printer" showing a woman in flowing brown coat shopping with her daughter. Border beginning in olive green, the lettering in red, ochre, white, black and greens. The drawing in pencil is unfinished. With notations at top to printer 2) 7 x 7" on the back of a page of magazine, in pencil with white gouache, "November MDCCCII." i.e. misrepresented, and a faint CCCC in pencil below. As well, a small marginalia instruction upper right. With Scarce thus.

First edition, large paper issue. 8vo. 311, 4 (ads); 319 pp. Original quarter light purple cloth over original boards, remnants of paper labels on spine. Very rare in original boards, only a few copies in boards have survived. The Large Paper Edition, completely uncut. With full access to the American consul's massive library of Spanish history in Madrid, Irving began working on the book, and later was invited to stay at the palace of the Duke of Gor, who gave him unfettered access to his library containing many medieval manuscripts which aided in the development of the tale. In a note to the 1850 revised edition, however, he confessed that the Jesuit priest was his own invention. He also admitted romanticizing some of the scenes and incidents of the history, but in this respect he was only doing what the Spaniards had done before.
