In the image, then-Chancellor of the Exchequer Churchill sits at table before a large pie labeled "SURPLUS" while a supplicant dog labeled "INCOME TAX PAYER" sits, begging and unregarded, on the floor. The pub sign visible through the window, "THE BRICKLAYER'S ARMS", refers to a new Churchill hobby becoming known to the public at the time. Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon titled "A HORNET'S NEST" appeared thus on p.689 of the 16 December 1936 issue of Punch. The artist is A. W. Lloyd. The carton is captioned "Poor Winnie-The-Pooh!" Winston Churchill became A. A. Milne's Pooh-Bear in this, the first Punch cartoon on the Abdication of King Edward VIII on 10 December 1936. This traumatic event occurred after the Baldwin government refused the King's proposal for a morganatic marriage (spouse, but not Queen) with the twice-divorced Wallis Simpson. The House strongly supported Baldwin, and when Churchill rose to urge patience, he was shouted down - temporarily losing all the political stock he had gained… Read More

Description:
New York: Random House, 1937. Hardcover. James Justinian Morier, (born c.1780, Smyrna, Tur. - died March 19, 1849, Brighton, Sussex, Eng.), English diplomat and writer whose fame depends on The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan (1824), a picaresque romance of Persian life that long influenced English ideas of Persia; its Persian translation (1905) led to the development of the modern Persian novel of social criticism. The first of a series of novels written by Morier after he retired, Hajji Baba drew on the knowledge of Persia and its people that he had acquired on the British embassy staff at Tehr n (1809–15)". (Britannica). This volume is near fine in a very good dust jacket. The publisher's illustrated cloth binding is bright and clean with trivial wear confined to the corners. The contents are clean and tight, slightly age-toned toward the page edges, but with no spotting. There is a single previous owner's name inked on the ffep. The dust jacket illustration mirrors that of the binding.… Read More

Description:
London: National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, 1945. Political edition," only printing. Pamphlet. This is an extraordinarily fine example of the only printing of the "Political" edition of this striking wartime speech pamphlet. Published in April, 1945, by the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, this was a campaign piece for the forthcoming General Election, containing Churchill's March 15, 1945 address to the Party Conference at Central Hall, Westminster. It attests to the fact that, as the war in Europe drew toward an inexorable close, the suspended tensions of domestic politics intruded ever more urgently on the politically unified war effort, fracturing the wartime coalition that had acknowledged Churchill as its indispensible Prime Minister. Having done so much to win the war, Churchill faced frustration of his postwar plans when his wartime government fell to Labour in the General Election of July 1945. He would remain Leader of the Opposition until… Read More

Description:
Melbourne and Sydney: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1943. First edition. Wraps. This is a striking and rare Australian pamphlet published during the Second World War. It contains excepts from the first three of Churchill's war speeches volumes: Into Battle, The Unrelenting Struggle, and The End of the Beginning. The pamphlet is bound in distinctive, pale green, wire-stitched card wraps, printed in dark green, with a half-tone photograph of Churchill's head and shoulders on the front cover. The contents are 14 unpaginated pages printed on card stock. A wartime publication date of 1943 is presumed. Bibliographer Ronald Cohen states: "The date of publication is not indicated; however, it is clearly after the publication of The End of the Beginning, to which it refers, and likely before Onwards to Victory, since there are no excerpts from that volume." (Vol. I, p.635) The speech excerpts are set out in short lines of varying length, looking like free verse, with spaced divisions between the 'stanzas'.… Read More

Description:
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1956. Publisher's presentation issue of the U.S. first edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a full publisher's presentation set of the U.S. first edition of Churchill's sweeping history and last great work. Unusually clean condition coupled with publisher presentation status renders this set compelling. The work was issued in four volumes between 1956 and 1958. This U.S. first edition is not to be confused with the similar looking Book-of-the-Month-Club (BOMC) edition and is far less often seen than its British counterpart. Quite scarcer still are the small number of U.S. first editions produced featuring the words "PRESENTATION EDITION. NOT FOR SALE" printed on the copyright page of each volume. In all other respects such copies are identical to normal U.S. first editions, including the $6.00 price on the dust jacket flap. Description:
London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1956. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. . This is a magnificent, full, four-volume British first edition, first printing set of Churchill's sweeping history and last great work. This first edition is regarded as one of the most beautiful productions of Churchill's works, with tall red volumes and striking, illustrated dust jackets. Churchill seems to have taken an active and detailed interest in the aesthetics of the publication. He told his doctor: "it is not necessary to break the back of the book to keep it open. I made them take away a quarter of an inch from the outer margins of the two pages and then add the half-inch so gained to the inner margin." He was clearly satisfied with the result, remarking with pardonable exuberance "It opens like an angel's wings." (Gilbert, Volume VIII, p.1184) Unfortunately, as beautiful as the first editions are, they proved somewhat fragile. The dust jackets commonly suffer significant fading, wear, soiling, and… Read More

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1957. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. . This is a pre-publication publisher’s review copy of the third volume of Churchill’s sweeping history and last great work. A 6.75 x 4.5 inches (17 x 11.5 cm) announcement from Cassell is printed on ivory cardstock with an orange nude illustration with the typed title, author, price, and publication date of “14th October 1957” announces “CASSEL and Company Limited have pleasure in sending for review a copy…” and requesting “that no review appears before that date”. A second notice, printed on white Cassell stationery measuring 8 x 5 inches (20 x 12.5 cm) exhorts the reviewer not to print a review prematurely: “…Owing to the particular importance of this book… review copies are being sent out earlier than usual. We should… be grateful if you would ensure that no review appears before publication date.” The book itself is near fine in a very good plus dust jacket. The red cloth binding is clean,… Read More

Such presentation copies are quite scarce. (See Langworth p.319 for further details.) Here is Volume Two only. Condition is near-fine+ in a very good correct first printing dust jacket. The binding is clean, tight, and square with bright gilt and virtually no wear. The contents are pristine - crisp and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership markings. The book appears clearly unread. Even the untrimmed text block fore edge is bright and clean. Only very slight speckling of the unfaded red-stained top edge prevents this copy from being truly fine. Description:
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1956. First U.S. edition, printer's special presentation binding. Full leather. This magnificent set is the printer’s special presentation binding of the U.S. first edition of Churchill's sweeping history and last great work. This one of only two such set we have encountered, and is unrecorded by Churchill’s bibliographers. The work was issued in four volumes between 1956 and 1958. This U.S. first edition was printed by Kingsport Press for the U.S. Publisher, Dodd, Mead & Company, Inc. There were publisher presentation sets of the first edition, so noted on the copyright pages, but such sets were not specially bound. This set is simply magnificent in both the quality and aesthetic effect of the full navy Morocco goatskin bindings. The bindings feature gilt print and gilt and red decoration on the spines and front covers, a gilt lion rampant within a gilt-framed red shield on each front cover. Description:
Taipei: Book World Company, undated. Hardcover. A History of the English-Speaking Peoples is Churchill's sweeping history and last great work. The first draft was completed just before the Second World War, but the work was not completed and published until after Churchill's second and final Premiership, nearly 20 years later. The four volumes of the British first edition were published between 1956 and 1958. In 1964, a Taiwanese pirated one-volume edition was published. Around that time, an undated four-volume pirated edition was also published, photo-reproduced from the Cassell first edition. This four-volume Taiwanese pirated edition was undated, but offprinted from the British first edition. The only indication of publication is type at the bottom of the rear face of each dust jacket reading in three lines: "The above volumes are supplied by / BOOK WORLD COMPANY / 15 Hung Yang Road Taipei". This pirated edition is smaller in stature than the British first edition and printed on thinner paper.… Read More

New York: The Macmillan Company , 1954. First U.S. edition. Hardcover. This is a jacketed copy of the first state of the first American edition. Per O’Brien (A247), the binding and dust jacket are both identical to those of the first English edition, featuring the English publisher’s name – “Blackwell” – on the jacket and binding spines. The sheets are also from the British publisher, the first state of the American edition denoted by the title page (featuring the name of the U.S. publisher, “The Macmillan Company”) being “tipped onto a stub of original English edition title page.” Condition is near fine in a very good plus dust jacket. The navy cloth binding is unfaded, clean, square, and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. We note only a few trivial blemishes and a touch of wrinkling at the spine ends. The contents are likewise clean with no previous ownership marks. A hint of spotting appears confined to the endpapers and page edges, which also show mild age-toning. Apart… Read More

Description:
London: The Daily Chronicle, 1912. Paperback. This rare pamphlet publication represents itself as "A pocket book for speakers and electors, containing a brief exposition of the arguments for Home Rule, and answers to the objections raised." This third ("Revised and Enlarged") edition of 1912 is the first to contain an important 4-page introduction by Winston Churchill, lending his name, and influence to the cause. At the time of publication, Churchill served in the Cabinet as First Lord of the Admiralty. His four-page introduction is decisively favorable to the cause: "The facts and arguments collected in this brief epitome deserve the attention of fair-minded and patriotic Englishmen." Churchill frames the arguments in the pamphlet thus: "if they are favorable, what a sorry part will a man have played who out of carelessness, prejudice, or partisanship is guilty of obstructing a settlement earnestly desired by the Irish people, and politic and necessary in itself!" Churchill's family had… Read More

London: William Heinemann, 1917. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This compelling inscribed association copy of the first edition of solider-poet Siegfried Sassoons (1886-1967) First World War poetry collection, The Old Huntsman, is inscribed on the front free-end paper To Mrs. Colefax. | from the author. | June. 1917. The front pastedown bears Sibyl and Arthur Colefaxs bookplate. While the grey, paper-covered boards are original, the book has been skillfully re-backed. The fresher grey-paper spine and printed paper label defer to the original aesthetic while ensuring binding integrity and providing a clean shelf appearance. The original boards show moderate toning and scuffing with shelf wear to edges and corners. The contents are clean with no spotting and modest age-toning, primarily evident to the otherwise clean untrimmed fore and bottom edges. The top edge shows some shelf dust. Description:
Admiralty House, London, 1912. Letter. This handsomely framed item features a typed, hand-emended, and signed 15 August 1912 letter from then-First Lord of the Admiralty Winston S. Churchill on his Admiralty stationery to his newly-appointed Naval Advisor to the Turkish Navy, British Rear-Admiral Arthur Limpus. The letter encapsulates Churchill’s expectations and ambitions regarding the Ottoman Empire, which would nearly cost Churchill both his political and corporeal lives during the First World War.   The letter anchors a multi-item display, framed at the center in double-matted tan and white linen, with each recess trimmed in gilt. Flanking the letter, likewise recessed are (to the right) a 431-word didactic titled “The Last Lion Faces First World War” engraved on dark bronze supplying a tidy overview of the historical context surrounding the letter. To the lower left, a matching dark bronze engraved placard reads “SIR WINSTON S. CHURCHILL | 1874-1965 | First Lord of the Admiralty |… Read More
