Description:
France PRECIS DOCUMENT REVIEWING OR WRITING UPON THE NERVOUS SYSTEM. From the estate of the world renowned bibliophile and antiquary, Sir Thomas Phillipps. THE ITEM: Undated and unsigned, though most certainly late 18th century early 19th century given the other dated documents in the file, in this precis, the author expounds on the nervous system. I am not quite sure if this is an essay by a medical student or a precis written by a doctor though it does appear pretty advanced writings for a student, though I could be wrong. Certainly this document is worthy of more research. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS (1792-1872). Born in 1792, Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper, including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and the entire inventories of booksellers. "I wish to have one copy of every book in the world," he declared to a friend. He very nearly succeeded. His collection… Read More

Description:
France, 1900. On offer is a beautifully written historical recitation in French titled "Invasions Barbares" or in English the 'Invasion of the Barbarians.' While undated we believe this is an early 20th century manuscript wherein over 96 pages in lovely calligraphic hand we are told of the barbarian invasion of Europe complete with hand-drawn maps. One online source provides perspective: "The Migration Period, also called Barbarian Invasions or Völkerwanderung (German for "wandering of the peoples"), was a period of human migration which occurred within the period of roughly 300-700 CE in Europe,[1] marking the transition from Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages. The migration included the Goths, Vandals, Bulgars, Alans, Suebi, Frisians, and Franks, among other Germanic, Iranian and Slavic tribes. The migration may have been triggered by the incursions of the Huns, in turn connected to the Turkic migration in Central Asia, population pressures, or climate… Read More

Description:
On offer is a fine diary recording the domestic and social responsibilities of a woman in California immediately before the United States entered World War II. The author is unknown, but from the diary, we learn that she lives in or near Santa Rosa, CA, is a wife and a mother, and is 49 when she begins this book. Her entries are detailed and she takes care to provide a very good description of how each day unfolds. The author is very focused on her family, and seems to fit many of the traditional expectations of women of her time. Throughout the diary, she refers to her husband as "Dad." "Washed and dried clothes between showers -- dried colors in the house. Pot luck dinner at Social Hall tonite at 6: 30 -- that's too early for us so we didn't plan to go -- dad went later to Council meeting -- they plan to call this Mr. Moorhouse to be our next Pastor -- at $1,500 per year. He may not want to come" (April 1). "Have been with mother quilting this eve, ironing done and clothes put away, had… Read More

A detailed 1928 diary handwritten by 62-year-old Ethel LeBer in rural Vermont during the early years of the Great Depression. LeBer was born in November 1865 and lived her life in northern Vermont, near the city of Bristol. She passed away in 1929 at the age of 63. She was married to William LeBer and they had one child, a daughter who died when she was 16. Together, Ethel and her husband operated a small farm. She was 62 when she kept this diary. The diary describes the daily life that she and her husband lived, detailing the many tasks necessary to keep their farm operation going. It is totally focused on their immediate life, with almost no references to what was happening in the larger world. "Still cold -- 15 degrees below. Nelson came down to dinner, was here just about 2 hrs. Will went down to Bristol and got a horse shod . He and Lloyd cleaned out the sawdust in the ice house" (February 6). "70 degrees. Hot & sultry.
