On offer is a wonderful, original illustration of one of Oscar Berger's Christmas Card Collection. Berger designed several Christmas Cards which could be purchased from him directly.This colorful crayon on paper is an original of one of these cards, 6 x 9, signed by Berger in lower right corner. Oscar Berger (May 12, 1901 - May 15, 1997) was a well-known caricaturist and cartoonist. Berger was born in Czechoslovakia. He became a cartoonist in Prague and studied art in Paris and Berlin. In Berlin, he secured an assignment with one of the largest Berlin daily newspapers and was one of the few journalists admitted to the 1923 Munich trial that followed Hitler's abortive putsch. Later, when Hitler came to power, Berger's cartoons angered Hitler and Berger was forced to leave the country. After spells in Budapest, Paris, and Geneva, where he attented numerous sessions at the League of Nations, he settled in London in 1935 where he worked for the Daily Telegraph. He had been attending surgeon for the out-door department of Bellevue hospital since 1879, and had performed many of the larger operations in surgery. In May, 1887, he went to Paris as the representative of the American Pasteur Institute, and studied under Louis Pasteur the prophylactic treatment for hydrophobia, which he introduced into the United States, bringing away the first innoculated rabbit that Pasteur allowed to leave his laboratory. He had successfully treated many that had been bitten by rabid animals. His principal medical paper is "Rabies and How to Prevent it, being a Discussion of Hydrophobia and the Pasteur Method of Treatment." THE ITEM: Undated and unsigned, though most certainly late 18th century early 19th century given the other dated documents in the file, in this precis, the author expounds on the nervous system. I am not quite sure if this is an essay by a medical student or a precis written by a doctor though it does appear pretty advanced writings for a student, though I could be wrong. While undated we believe this is an early 20th century manuscript wherein over 96 pages in lovely calligraphic hand we are told of the barbarian invasion of Europe complete with hand-drawn maps. BELGIUM BELGE On offer is an original undated 12 x 8 inch photograph, perhaps used as a poster, wherein Belgium's greatest flying ace, Willy Coppens de Houthulst, writes a short note and autograph signature. The Belgian flyer was awarded 37 official air victories between April and October of 1918. He was injured in the last sortie, losing his left leg, but he continued to fly until 1940. Norman for his letter of the 21st, & will endeavour to avail himself of the opportunities offered. Mch 23." Very good condition. 2) Also included, is a letter 'front', addressed and signed by Gladstone in 1839, when he was M.P. for Newark. On offer is a fine diary recording the domestic and social responsibilities of a woman in California immediately before the United States entered World War II. The author is unknown, but from the diary, we learn that she lives in or near Santa Rosa, CA, is a wife and a mother, and is 49 when she begins this book. Her entries are detailed and she takes care to provide a very good description of how each day unfolds. The author is very focused on her family, and seems to fit many of the traditional expectations of women of her time. Throughout the diary, she refers to her husband as "Dad." A detailed 1928 diary handwritten by 62-year-old Ethel LeBer in rural Vermont during the early years of the Great Depression. LeBer was born in November 1865 and lived her life in northern Vermont, near the city of Bristol. She passed away in 1929 at the age of 63. She was married to William LeBer and they had one child, a daughter who died when she was 16. Together, Ethel and her husband operated a small farm. She was 62 when she kept this diary. The diary describes the daily life that she and her husband lived, detailing the many tasks necessary to keep their farm operation going. It is totally focused on their immediate life, with almost no references to what was happening in the larger world. "Still cold -- 15 degrees below.
