Some minor foxing, mainly to the fore edge and to the margins of a couple of dozen pages otherwise a very good copy in original black and red snakeskin patterned cloth, with the spine lettered in gilt. Some minor rubbing to the extremities of the cloth and light fading to the spine but overall a very good example of Waugh's fourth novel with the gilt still bright.

Each plate with the title printed below the border. 95 line illustrations throughout, some full page. Previous owners neat name on front blank endpaper otherwise a fine copy in original burgundy cloth with gilt illustrations and lettering to front board and spine. Front board with quadruple ruled black borders, spine ruled in gilt. In the scarce original publshers dustwrapper with colour illustration mounted onto the front panel, below black lettering and four line border. Flaps and other panels lettered in black. Original printed price (15/-) on spine has been blacked out neatly. Aside from a couple of tiny chips to the wrapper this is a beautiful fine example of this well produced edition. Scarce in this condition.:

(7 x 4.8 inches). iv, 236pp. A fine copy in publishers original green cloth binding with elaborate decoration and lettering in black and gilt to the front board and spine. Rear board with blind stamped borders and central publishers logo. Decorative floral endpapers. All edges gilt. Previous owners neat oval leather bookplate, lettered and decorated in gilt, on the front paste-down endpaper. A lovely copy of this famous work. --- Printing and the mind of man no. 375.

John Murray. London.,1815. FIRST EDITION. 8vo.(8.5 x 5.6 inches). Lovely clean, wide margined copy in contemporary full red straight grained morocco. Elaborate gilt decoration to spine and corners of boards, within a triple ruled border. Centre ruled panel in gilt. Gilt inner dentelles. Blue coated endpapers. All edges gilt. Spine a bit darkened and rubbed. Boards with areas of darkening to top(where the book has sat on a shelf betwen shorter books). Overall a very good copy in a very good, highly attractive early binding. Herbert's great Scandinavian poem appears to have only been printed twice in his life-time, This first edition and a second printing of 1816.:

Hodder & Stoughton. London. 1901. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (7.6 x 5.3 inches). viii,402pp, 6pp of publishers adverts. Illustrated with 12 full page mono illustrations by James Craig. Publishers 1st issue binding of grey cloth, with light green lettering and design of Marble arch, blocked in blue, green and mustard, to the front panel. The spine is lettered in gilt within a green ruled border. Top edge gilt. A little minor rubbing to the extremities and the front inner hinge is cracked but firm. Overall a better than very good copy of this uncommon novel. (Glover and Greene; Victorian Detective Fiction. No. 303). Not in Wolff.

Leonard Parsons. London. 1925. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Green cloth binding with light green ruling and lettering to the front board and spine. Neat four line inscription (dated 1929) on the half title otherwise a fine clean copy in the scarce original dustwrapper with a colour design to the front panel by John Austen. A couple of small nicks to the extremities and a few marks to the rear panel but overall a better than very good example if this attractive dustwrapper.

Inscribed by the author.--- For my boy friend Cote from his 76 year old "boy" friend Uncle Bob Sherwood Last of Barnum's Clowns, New York Columbus Day 1932---. Illustrated with mono photo plates and a few plates with music and lyrics to songs. Very good copy in very good dustwrapper with colour illustration to front panel. Chip to top of front panel, not affecting lettering or image but overall a very good example.

A. Ferroud. - Librarire Dea Amateurs. Paris. 1892. LIMITED EDITION. Small 4to. (9.5 x 6.5 inches). Beautifully illustrated with twenty fine etchings throughout the text after Rochegrosse, each with a tissue guard. One of 250 copies, from a total edition of 500, on Velin a'Arches paper. This copy is out of series with presentation inscription, signed by the publisher, on the limitation leaf. Finely bound by Bickers and Son in early full dark green morocco. Spine with raised bands with gilt ruled lines. Compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. Single gilt ruled line border on boards and board edges. Top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. Marbled endpapers. Decorative gilt roll to the turn-ins. Some offsetting to the endpapers from the leather turn-ins. A very good copy in an attractive late nineteenth century leather binding that has some very light wear to the edges and the spine darkened to an attractive brown colour but is overall very good indeed.

Chatto & Windus. London. 1888. FIRST EDITION. 3 Volumes. 8vo. (7.5 x 5 inches). Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper of volume I, "A. P. Watt. From the Author". Original brown cloth blocked in metallic blue in a geometric pattern to the spines and front boards. The spines are lettered in gilt. Floral patterned endpapers. Spines rolled a little, some light spotting to endpapers and title pages but generally a clean, tight and bright copy. Overall a better than very good set. Alexander Pollock Watt (1838–1914) was the first successful British literary agent. His agency, started in 1875, is still active today and is, in fact, the longest-established literary agency in the world. He acted as Besant's agent, and also his literary executor.

Yellow coated endpapers. Inner hinges cracking. Some gatherings still unopened. Spine a bit rubbed and with some chipping to the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine but still overall a near to very good copy. Scarce in original cloth.

A complete set of the 12 volume History of Middle Earth plus the extra Unfinished Tales volume. Original publishers boards in different colours but all with uniform gilt lettering to the spines. In the original multi colour dustwrappers. A couple of very minor rubs to the extremities of a couple of dustwrappers but overall a very near fine, bright and clean set of this first publication of Tolkien's entire History of Middle Earth, in which tales, songs, poems, maps, illustrations, genealogical tables, and even linguistic primers for Tolkien's languages, give the fullest picture available of one of the most thoroughly imagined worlds ever created in the history of fantasy literature. A fine, clean and bright set of Churchill's hugely popular historical work.

R. W. Simpson and Co., Ltd. Richmond & Barnes. 1925. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (7.2 x 4.9 inches). viii, 86pp. Illustrated with frontis and 14 smaller engraved and photo illustrations in the text, a mixture of views, portraits and plans. Original publishers brown paper wraps with dark green lettering and design to front cover. The covers have one small crease to the front and are toned and marked but still very good, while internally the pages are very clean and fresh.

Printed by Jules Didot, for Baudry. Paris. 1824. FIRST PARIS EDITION. Two volumes. 8vo. (7.4 x 4.7 inches). Vol. 1:xxxix, 344pp. - Vol. 2: viii, 312pp. Very good copies, untrimmed in the original publishers printed wraps. Neat engraved booksellers label (Langues etrangeres vivantes Bobee et Hingray, Libraries, Paris) stuck onto the front free endpaper of volume one. Edges untrimmed. Some creasing to the corners and minor loss to the paper on the bottom of the spines but overall a very good copy and uncommon in the original paper wraps.

Printed for Francis Coggan. London. 1706. Fourth year, of a total of 11 published, but complete in itself. 8vo. (7.8 x 5.1 inches). iv, 288pp, 72pp Appendix, 10pp Index. Two fold out plates, one the order of the battle of the confederate armies, 18th July 1705, the second a plan of the town and castle of Nice. A very good copy in a recent binding of half dark brown calf. Spine with raised bands, the compartments ruled and lettered in gilt, marbled paper on boards. One split to the fold-out plan of Nice, without any los, but generally this is very good indeed.

G. G. J and J. Robinson......London. 1786. New edition. 5 volumes. 8vo. (8.3 x 5.6 inches). Previous owners name written neatly on title pages. A very good set in contemporary full tree calf bindings. Spines ruled in gilt. Red title and circular number labels, gilt. The hinges are cracked and rubbed but all still holding. Top and bottom of spines with some minor loss and some rubbing but overall a good set.

George Allen and Unwin Ltd. London. 1946. FIRST U. K EDITION. 8vo.(8.8 x 5.9 inches). 916pp. A clean copy bound in original publishers oatmeal cloth with brown and yellow stamped lettering panels to the spine. Cloth a little marked but generally the book is in very good condition throughout. In the original dustwrapper with some minor chipping to the top and bottom of the spine. Rear panel is marked and rubbed, but overall very good. ------- A nice copy of Russell's hugely popular history, broadly covering covering philosophers and philosophical thought from the Pre-Socratics up to John Dewey and William James, and finishing with Logical Analysis. Russell won the Nobel prize for Literature in 1950, with the Nobel committee listing this title among the works that influenced their decision. While criticised by some as being too general, many found the book an accessible and easily readable introduction to Philosophy and it became a best seller which has not been out of print since.
