Description:
Hamilton, Alexander. Report of the Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, on the subject of a national bank read in the House of Representatives Dec. 13th, 1790. New-York: Published by S. Whiting & Co. 1811. Third edition. Self-wraps. Disbound. 22 cm. 44 pp.OCLC shows 9 holdings (Columbia; Hamilton Coll.; NY Hist. Soc.; NY Pub. Lib.; Huntington; Yale; AAS; Portland Pub. Lib.; U. Penn.) Shaw & Shoemaker; American Imprints. 24307. First published in 1790, Hamilton's proposal for a national bank was controversial and only accepted - against the opposition of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison – after much debate. Hamilton believed that Article I Section 8 of the Constitution, permitting the Congress to make laws that are "necessary and proper" for the government, empowered lawmakers to create a national bank. Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson and Representative James Madison of Virginia disagreed, countering that powers not expressly granted to Congress in the Constitution belonged to the… Read More

[Mexico] [Brands] [Criminal Process] Prosecution of Horse Thieves. San Juan del Rio, Querétaro, Mexico: 1864. Bando of manuscript documents on watermarked, laid paper. 32 cm. With a manuscript illustration of the Hacienda's brands. 66 pp. Edge wear and chipping. Stains. Very good. A criminal case of horse theft from the Hacienda Laborcilla, located in San Juan del Rio, Querétaro, Mexico. This was a case of the theft of 26 horses by five men. The ledger describes the criminal process that found four men guilty of the theft. It includes a page printed page with the brands of the Hacienda, which was both to demonstrate ownership and to help to recover the ones that were already sold. The Hacienda Laborcilla is listed in Cochran, The Haciendas of Mexico (1886) p. 162. An interesting and extensive example of the criminal process and the importance of horses - and the serious nature of stealing horses - in the Nineteenth Century. An early example of brands in North America.

[Texas] [John Wesley Hardin] George C. Tennille. Handwritten Promissory Note, Signed. Helena, Texas. March 18, 1872. One sheet of lined paper 10.4 x 20 cm. Promise to pay Lawhon & Bookout $225. Discoloration at top, ink smudge, else very good.
Tennille came to Texas with his family and settled in Austin's third colony. He was a good friend of John Wesley Hardin and a member, with Hardin, of the Taylor faction of the Sutton-Taylor feud. The Sutton-Taylor Feud, the longest and bloodiest in Texas, grew out of the bad times following the Civil War. It lasted almost a decade and some 35 men were killed, including Tennille – Handbook of Texas. Tennille is mentioned in Hardin's book, The Life of John Wesley Hardin as Written by Himself. "Although Tennille had always supported Hardin and the Taylors, he seems to have also worked quietly to bring an end to the fighting. George was considering refuge in Mexico when a posse led by Sherriff Green DeWitt caught up with … the sometimes outlaw … on July 8,… Read More

[Texas Revolution] [Antonio López de Santa Anna] [José Mariá Ortiz Monasterio] Handwritten memorandum on the Capture of Santa Anna. Puebla, June 17, 1836. On one sheet of laid paper folded into four leaves. 31 cm. From the Secretary of Foreign Affairs to the Governor of Puebla. Stains and edge chips. Good.
Written less than a month after the defeat at San Jacinto and the capture of Santa Anna, this very interesting document discusses Santa Anna's capture by the Texans and what the governments needs to do going forward, including collecting funds to defeat the rebel colonists:
"The National Honor having been highly defiled by the perfidious Tejas colonists revolt in that territory, with the intention to separate it from the Mexican Republic and arrogance with the victory they attained last April 21 over the small force commanded in person by Benemérito de la Patria General D. Antonio López de Santa Anna. The time has arrived to avenge the insults made to the whole Nation in the person of the… Read More

Adina De Zavala led the opposition to tearing down portions of the Alamo "in a resolute and voluble stand" and was instrumental in the preservation of portions of the original wall of the convent. In fact, she barricaded herself inside the north barrack of the Alamo for three days in February 1908 to protest its destruction. In 1912 she organized the Texas Historical and Landmarks Association, which placed thirty-eight markers at historic sites in Texas. She probably did more than any other one person in stirring interest in the preservation of the Spanish Governor's Palace in San Antonio. – Handbook of Texas. A tireless protector of Texas history, De Zavala is now honored with a marker in the patio of the convent at the Alamo
