A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper with just the lightest of wear to top edge. First US edition, INSCRIBED BY RENDELL TO HER NEIGHBOURS: 'To Pat and Douglas -- love from Ruth'. Douglas Brown [1917-2003] was the BBC's first religious affairs correspondent, and held that position until his retirement in 1977. He and his wife Pat were Ruth Rendell's neighbours in the village of Polstead, Suffolk. Much of her work is set in the county, and when made a life peer she chose the title Baroness Rendell of Babebergh, of Aldeburgh, in the County of Suffolk.

First published by Bern Porter in The Happy Rock [1945], these five essays describing Henry Miller's life in Paris are written by those who knew him at the time: Just A Brooklyn Boy by Emil Schnellock; The Happy Rock by Lawrence Durrell; Henry Miller In Villa Seurat by Alfred Perlès; All The Animals In The Zoo by Knud Merrild; and The Genesis Of The Tropic Of Cancer by Michael Frankel. They were published separately for the first time in 1973 by the Village Press, on a variety of coloured papers, and each front panel illustrated with a water colour by Miller.

Donald Woods began his professional life in South Africa as a cub reporter on the radical newspaper The Daily Despatch, and rose through the ranks to become its editor in 1965. He was close friends with the Black Consciousness Movement leader Steve Biko, murdered by police in 1977. London: C. W. Beaumont, 1926. Large 8vo, pp. 156. Original illustrated boards, vellum spine lettered in gilt. Pages uncut. Light spotting to endpapers, boards browned, spine ends a little bumped and two small splashes to spine itself. Five hand-coloured illustrations, and with monochrome illustrations throughout. First edition, no. 25 of 325 copies published by the author. With a preface by Sacheverell Sitwell to whom, with his brother Osbert, the book is dedicated., Cyril Beaumont was one of the pre-eminent dance historians of the twentieth century. He published this book from his Charing Cross Road bookshop which, from 1910 until his death in 1976, specialised in all things dance. A life of Beaumont, by Kathrine Sorley Walker, was published in 2006.

Text block a little browned, a couple of small marks to preliminaries, otherwise a near fine copy with just a little rubbing to spine ends, in a very good photo-illustrated dustwrapper, with two very small chips to lower edge of front panel, one to foot of spine, and a couple of closed tears to the lower edge at rear. 8 pp. of black and white photographs at rear. First edition. A slightly sensationalist dustwrapper design hides a serious study of the Beat movement -- one of the first -- written by one of the elders of the movement. Lawrence Lipton was a novelist, essayist and critic, associate of the Chicago writers active during the 1920s, Ben Hecht and Sherwood Anderson among them. (He was also the father of Inside The Actors Studio host, James Lipton).

A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with just a little wear to spine ends. First edition of this NBC radio tie-in, in which the fifteenth and final chapter is wrapped in a sealed paper sleeve. Synopses of the first fourteen chapters were broadcast by the network, and people were invited to submit their own final chapter before the complete book was published. 'A committee of three nationally known men' (dust jacket blurb) chose the best submissions, and cash prizes were awarded. Chann Patrick's only book -- suggesting the gimmick was less than successful -- and an excellent copy, with the final chapter's sleeve, rather sadly, still unopened. HUBIN, p. 319

A rare outing in hard covers for the prolific pulp writer Donald Bayne Hobart [1898-1970], who spent most of his career writing mystery stories and westerns for any magazine that would take them. The blurb promises us a cast list including Anatole Selden ('interesting and mysterious'), Ah Sing the Chinaman, Stambo the Negro, and Bennie the Duck ('a dangerous gangster').... Very scarce in the dust jacket (especially in such a nice example). HUBIN, p. 206
