Description:
8vo. Full leather binding, Illustrated with portraits, head and tale-pieces. Well bound, with raised bands, title missing from spine of Vol 1. The copy is clean and crisp, strong corners, and untoned, although there is very light print from some plates on the opposite page. 1800 grams, 20.5 by 13 cm's. Vol. I 294 pages. Vol. II 390pages. Vol. III 347pages. Includes Index and List of the Plates - 8 b&w, List of the Woodcuts and the artists 28 altogether. The work is a satirical polemic upon Roundheads, Puritans, Presbyterians and many of the other factions involved in the English Civil War. The work was written in three parts in 1663, 1664 and 1678 although an unauthorised edition came out in 1662. The Annotations are excellent, explaining the poem, and historical events that relate to the poem's text. Published only four years after Charles II had been restored to the throne and the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell being completely over, the poem found an appreciative audience.
