Announcement of a mass-rally at LA's Olympic Auditorium that featured appearances of Harry Bridges and his two co-defendants, along with their legal team of Vincent Hallinan, James Martin MacInnis and Robert W. Kenny. A prominent and charismatic labor leader as head of the longshoreman's union, the Australian-born Harry Bridges was prosecuted and convicted under the notorious Smith Act for having denied on his naturalization application having ever been a member of the Communist Party. Fellow unionists J.R. Robertson and Henry Schmidt acted as character witnesses for Bridges and were convicted criminal fraud and conspiracy, verdicts that were eventually overturned in 1953. The Bridges case became one of the most high-profile of the red-scare era.
