Emmett Grogan was the "leader" of the Diggers and his philosophy of "everything for free," his guidance of the hippies in the Haight, and his avoidance of celebrity culture made him one of the most intriguing and influential counterculture figures during this period. This "so what" handbill admonishes the community to not take him too seriously. Three-hole-punch to left edge, else fine. (The Diggers "liberated" whatever paper they could and in several instances, as can be seen in Notes from a Revolution: Com/Co, the Diggers & the Haight, they used paper with holes punched to the top or sides to produce their handbills.) One of the scarcest Diggers handbills.

SF: Communication Company, 1967.. 4to. Broadside. First edition. This event, also known as Bedrock One, was a concert/Happening presented by the Diggers during the "Summer of Love." Richard Brautigan & the Caped Crusaders, the Diggers, the S. F. Mime Troupe, the Steve Miller Blues Band, The Orkustra, and others, are listed as participants. Lights by The Lysurgic Power & Light Company. Hosts: Warren Hinckle and Mark Comfort. "Minors and CIA agents welcome." Slightly toned around the edges, else fine.

[SF]: Communication Company, [1967].. 4to. Broadside. First edition. The Diggers request help from the hip community to bring their "hotel" up to code asking: "Please help. It will be free to all when it's done." They go on to explain their intentions to "have an all night center, sack out places for singles & couples, free movies, theater, acid rescue, dream life for street orphans, everything we have is yours." A nice example of the usefulness of the Communication Company daily handbills in furthering the direct-action, community organizing role that the Diggers played in the Haight-Ashbury during the apex of the hippie influx. Two-hole punch to top edge as issued, else very fine. (The Diggers "liberated" whatever paper they could and in several instances, as can be seen in Notes from a Revolution: Com/Co, the Diggers & the Haight, they used paper with holes punched to the top or sides to produce their handbills.)

The Trips Festval event took place at the Portland Armory on May 14, 1967. Designed by "Air Sign Co." which was primarily Paul Bassett with occasional help from Gina Papen. Printed in blue and yellow featuring an illustration of a biplane. Some shadows of tape residue to verso only, a couple of small spots of which are visible from the front, else fine (5.5" x 8.5"). Very scarce.

No place: privately published, 1973.. 4to. Prints a photograph by Ronnie Cutrone of members of the Bay Area Dada group. Printed in black on yellow card stock, trivial, minute crease to bottom edge, else fine.

n.p.:n.p., [1968].. Prints a long text about the "International Youth Festival" to be held in Chicago for the 1968 Democratic convention. "...there will be music playing and people swaying, dancing in the streets...agents of the Pothead's Benevolent Association have planted hundreds of pot seeds...free people, free pot, free music, free theatre; a whole new culture will manifest itself to the world, rising from the ashes of America...Democrats and dope fiends will chase each other through hotel corridors." Fine.

Berkeley: Book People, 1969.. 4to. The event is scheduled to take place at Book People's warehouse in Berkeley where attendees are invited to "Share an afternoon with Richard Brautigan..." Illustrated with a small cartoonish drawing of Brautigan. Printed in black on yellow stock with the text reproduced in holograph. Fine.

No place: Privately published, ca. 1960's.. Intricately embellished drawing of a biker's head and shoulders giving a more hippieish interpretation of the usual rough biker look. Done by the artist "Thompson." Fine.

NY: Gerdes Folk City, 1961.. 4to. The first in the series of concerts was a long stint by Lonnie Johnson, Victoria Spivey and David Gude playing September 12 through the 24th. From September 26 through October 8th the Greenbriar Boys were playing with Bob Dylan, then entirely unknown and having just arrived in NYC, as their opening act. This was Dylan's second professional gig (his first one was four months earlier opening for John Lee Hooker at the same venue). Famously, the opening night performance was attended by noted critic Robert Shelton of The New York Times who went to review The Greenbriar Boys but instead was so captivated by Dylan that he write a glowing review that raved about Dylan as a new talent calling him "one of the most distinctive stylists to play a Manhattan cabaret in months" noting that "there is no doubt that he is bursting at the seams with talent." Pasadena: Privately published, 1962.. 4to. Features a reproduction of a work by Talbert. Printed in black on white stock. Talbert was an accomplished Pop and assemblage artist closely aligned with Wallace Berman and the LA avant-garde. He died of alcohol poisoning at age 41. Some handling impressions, very good plus to near fine.

Richard Brautigan, Lew Welch, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Andrew Hoyem, Ed Bullins, and others, are listed as participants. Features an illustration of a naked man carrying a sheep over his shoulders. This is the issue on brown stock, there was also a version on white stock, priority unknown. Three-hole-punch to the right edge (since the Communication Company often used paper "liberated" from various sources many of their productions were done on paper with a three-hole-punch to the edge). Very fine.
