The author, Lyman Frederick Kebler (1863-1955), was an American chemist, physician, and writer. He "administrated the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 and was involved with uncovering counterfeit drugs. His office managed all chemists whose task was to determine the boundary between drugs and food, for which different criteria were enforced. By 1908 the Drug Laboratory was divided into four laboratories and was renamed the Drug Division. Kebler became… Read More

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 443 & 445 Broadway, 1865. Small octavo (18.5 x 12 cm.), 200, [4] pages. Advertisements. The First American Edition of Leonard Francis Simpson's English language translation of Brillat-Savarin's magnificent Physiologie du Gout. The earliest English language translation was that of Fayette Robinson, published in Philadelphia in 1854. Simpson's translation here is quite unfaithful to the original, admitting in the Introduction that "Many parts are, however, condensed, others omitted, as not suited to the present tone of society." Starting in 1864, editions of Simpson's translation (published in the UK) strayed even further, with emphasis placed on a rejection of gourmandise, and the title to what we have here. Quite a departure from Brillat-Savarin's original. But the translator did have high hopes for this book to affect a change upon Britain, and presumably in America with this issue. The Translator's Preface has been omitted in this edition, which is a shame, as it… Read More

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1902. Octavo (19 x 12 cm.), 478, [2] pages. Index. Advertisements. Later printing. Pierre Blot (1818-1874) came to America as a refugee from Napoleonic France and in 1865 he opened Professor Blot's Culinary Academy of Design in New York City, arguably the first French cooking school in America. This book is an extension of these classes, in which he taught that French cookery emphasized the "good things in life" making one's mind and body better. ~ A nice clean copy, in publisher's burgundy cloth, titled in gilt on the spine. Some spotting and mottling to boards, spine and to text block edges. Near very good. [OCLC locates just one copy of this printing (Getty Research Institute); Bitting, page 45 (different printing); Cagle 93 (second printing)].

San Francisco: [The Church; Printed by] Bacon & Company Printers, 1879. Small octavo (17 x 11.75 cm.), [ii], 82 pages. Advertisements. Stated revised (thus second) edition. A fair-related fundraiser that was subsequently revised as a church cookbook; one of the earliest but less widely known among California cookbooks. With approximately two hundred brief recipes, unattributed, but tested by the compiler "in my own home." A preponderance of baked-good entries not only testifies to the original context for which the contributions were solicited, but also clarifies the intended audience, namely, New Englanders transplanted to the West Coast: Hanover Cakes, Kittery Cakes, (White) Mountain Cake, Newburyport Cake, Bangor Cake, Indian Baked Pudding. New England is kept in view, as well, in various evocations of Codfish and Chowder. In addition: Rice Fritters, Sago and Apple, Squash Pie, Popped-Corn Pudding, Currant Jelly, Raspberry Vinegar.
