Description:
San Francisco: Printed by the Grabhorn Press for The Westgate Press, 1930. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. One of 350 copies, octavo size, [122] pp. An early Grabhorn Press publication, in wonderful condition with most signatures unopened; with initials designed by Valenti Angelo. Publised by The Westgate Press, one of the private enterprises launched by the Grabhorn Press. It was established in 1929 by San Francisco historian Oscar Lewis and Robert Grabhorn with the intention of publishing limited, signed editions by popular contemporary authors. It was successful for three years, until it had to be closed due the strain of the economic depression, and its inability to come to an acceptable business arrangement with Edwin Grabhorn. Published here for the first time, this edition focuses primarily on the letters exchanged between Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) and Joseph Tunison (1849-1916), and the literary controversy that occurred after Hearn's death. Patrick Lafcadio Hearn had in… Read more

Description:
[New York]: The Limited Editions Club, 1998. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Ranney, Edward. Quarto size, 30 pp., signed by Edward Ranney. Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (born Ricardo Eliecer Neftali Reyes y Bosoalto, 1904-1973) became known as a poet at the young age of 10 years and began publishing his verse at 15; Gabriel Garcia Marquez once called Neruda "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language", and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. This volume is a portion of the Canto General (General Song) which consists of more than 15,000 lines, being a telling of the entire American Western Hemisphere from an Hispanic American perspective; it is a beautiful poem of praise to the continent as it flourished before the arrival of the Spanish. Wonderfully brought to life by the photogravures of the work of Edward Ranney (b. 1942), who has been internationally recognized for his images of Inca and Mayan landscapes and architecture; Scientific American commented that Ranney did… Read more

[Santa Cruz, California]: Foolscap Press, 2009. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Gotthold, Peggy. No. 34 of 110 copies (including 10 hors commerce), quarto size, [51] pp. "Herakles and the Eurystheusian Twelve-Step Program" is a comedic dialogue between Herakles (Hercules) and Eurystheus, two heroes from Greek mythology set against each other as rivals by Zeus and Hera. The twelve-step program here refers to the Twelve Labours of Herakles, heroic tasks Herakles performs as acts of penance, serving under the direction of his cousin, King Eurystheus. The text in this book consists of imagined conversations between Herakles and Eurystheus regarding the Twelve Labours, and is a delightful mixture of humour and mythology.Written by Lawrence G. Van Velzer, this volume contains illustrations by Peggy Gotthold, who owns Foolscap Press together with Van Velzer; Gotthold creates illustrations in the style of Greek vase-painting, with imagery corresponding to each of the Twelve Labours printed in the… Read more

Description:
New York: Leslie-Judge Company, 1927. 4th Printing. Hardcover. Very good +. Twenty-fourmo size, 63 pp. Norman Hume Anthony, cartoonist and illustrator, editor of Judge Magazine and, later, Life Magazine, authored this bar book during Prohibition in America. A predecessor of the 1930 "Savoy" cocktail book, which takes many recipes from "Here's How!", this book contains many popular cocktail recipes from the early twentieth century, accompanied by Anthony's witticisms in the form of suggested "toasts" to go with each drink, printed at the bottom of each page. This delightful volume shows the liveliness during the Prohibition era that pervaded the 1920s despite the laws in place (the Prohibition law would not be repealed until five years after this book was published). This book is the fourth printing of the first edition, printed in March 1927, two months after the first impression. ___DESCRIPTION: Full light blue paper with gilt lettering on the front board, blue endpapers, title page in orange and… Read more

One of 160 copies, octavo size, 55 pp. The thirteenth publication from The Allen Press, this story by Honore de Balzac (1799-1850) was originally titled "Maitre Cornelius" and first appeared in 1831 in the "Revue de Paris"; it was published in book form in 1832. Balzac was a prolific French novelist and playwright, perhaps best remembered today for "EugĂ©nie Grandet", his first bestseller; in this famous wayward love story, set in fifteenth-century France, Marie de Saint-Vallier, daughter of Louis XI, is unhappily married, and becomes entangled in an unusual love affair. The book features four wood engravings by the incomparable Mallette Dean (1907-1975), painter and illustrator who worked for most of his career in San Francisco on projects such as the WPA Mural Project, the murals in Coit Tower, and for fifteen years illustrated books for the Grabhorn Press and other Bay-Area presses such as the… Read more

Berkeley: Printed by The Professional Press, 1918. Soft cover. Very Good. Octavo size, 181 pp. Full title page: "History of the Berkeley Schools, An account of the School Systems of Berkeley from its establishment to date, with a detailed presentation of the special features in the various schools". Early, perhaps the first, written history of the schools in Berkeley. The author opens with a brief historical sketch of the land passing from the last Spanish governor of California in 1820 to Don Luis Peralta, who divided the land between his four sons. From this short tour through history he moves to the First Board of Education and then sets forth how the school system grew and developed, even listing the particulars of each school in the district - a fascinating glimpse into the educational history of an area that is now home to Cal, one of the great research universities. Description:
New York: Thomas Kinnersley, 1825. Leather bound. Very good +. One volume in two books (complete), quarto size, 958 pp. Oliver Goldsmith (ca. 1728-1774) spent much of his life as a wastrel - just barely earning his BA from Trinity, flitting from studying theology to law to medicine, finally finding his stride as a writer for then-current periodicals. It would not be until he was hired by John Newbery (a bookseller and publisher) to write humorous pieces for an otherwise practical financial journal that he began to be critically regarded. Along the way he met and was befriended by the great Samuel Johnson, a then-rising literary light with the publication of his justly famous Dictionary in 1755; they would remain life-long friends, and it was Johnson who, when Goldsmith was (once again) in penury, sold the copyright of "The Vicar of Wakefield" for the princely sum of GBP 60. This book was finally published in 1766 to largely favourable reviews, although it would not become a best-seller until the… Read more
