Description:
1909. (EHON) NAKAMURA Fusetsu & KAWAHIGASHI Hekigoto. HAIGA HO. Tokyo: Kokado, 1909. 23 x 15.4 cm. String-bound Japanese style in flexible covers with stamped title. This visual and textual examination of the relationship between "haiga", haiku drawings, and the the haiku themselves was a collaborative effort between Fusetsu, a Western-style oil painter who was also perhaps the most eminent practitioner of haiga in his day, and Hekigoto, a noted haiku poet. They were both intimates of Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) and leaders of the influential literary circle associated with HOTOTOGISU magazine. Counting the decorative title page, there are 13 full page color woodcuts after designs by Fusetsu, 40 calligraphed haiku by Hekigoto reproduced in woodcut and a 38 page scholarly discussion by Fusetsu, as well as a few collotypes. A remarkable piece both visually and for its significance for the development of a new literary and visual aesthetic for Japan in the 20th century. Overall, this copy is very good in… Read More

Description:
19. HAIKU] HAIMI TAIKAN. NAKAMURA FusetsU, ISHII Hakutei, et al. HAIMI TAIKAN. 34.6x 23.7 cm. The foremost proponents of the "haiku-style" (most associated with HOTOTOGISU magazine) in early 20th Century Japan have herein collaborated to create a multiple album of brushed original drawings, calligraphy and poems. Included are Fusetsu, Hakutei, Kyoshi, Hekigoto^, Izan, etc. Without colophon or preface, but this well-known limited private production is almost certainly from the mid to late teens of the twentieth century and was probably created in To^kyo^. There are 12 sheets laid into this orihon folding album in brocade covers, all in the (original?) chitsu case. A few wormholes but otherwise quite clean and in very good condition. $1,750.00.

Very good plus. Todd and Bowden, p. 567: "As Scott explained to Byron the day after issue, this sketch was intended for Joanna Baillie's forthcoming Collection of Poems but, as it soon 'ran out of bounds', was now published separately. Unsôdô, Kyoto & Tokyo, Taishô 10 [1921]. 4 vols., each 8 3/4" X 17 3/16" with a total of 100 full page color prints of Japanese irises, along with 5 pages of color samples. In addition, there is a 40pp. letterpress text volume(6 1/4" X 8 7/8"). The definitive work on the subject and coincidentally one of the finest examples of botanical book illustration ever done in Japan by the foremost botanist (and flower painter) of his day. Printed exquisitely by the best color woodblock printer of 20th century Japan. A work of great rarity, the paper is creamy, not stark white - if toned at all, uniformly throughout. Without the image foxing sometimes seen in this work, albeit a scattering in some preliminaries. Beautifully printed. In the original clasped chitsu case.
