London: Benjamin Billingsley, 1683. Rare prophetical pamphlet published after the appearance of Halley's Comet a year before. 4 page folio text with caption title and imprint from colophon. Small woodcut on last page depicting a 'Flagg figured with a White Wolf'. 4 pages. Toning to paper edges and a couple of brown spots, otherwise a very good copy bound in modern quarter calf over marbled boards with additional blanks to bulk out the volume. This is the dated version of the pamphlet - ESTC R10135 - (11 locations); the undated version found in 2 further locations. Provenance: this copy sold at Bonhams in 2019; previously not seen at auction since 1986. The Mystery is a prophetical pamphlet, published in the wake of the appearance of Halley's Comet in 1682, and promising 'sundry other Misterious Prophecys, both Ancient and Modern' which relate to 'the danger of an invation [sic] in England by the Turks'. Fine, showing only minor signs of handling. Gift inscription to Alasdair Gray "From Jamie, Hope you enjoy". Provenance: from the recent Glasgow dispersal sale of Alasdair Gray's library. Gray (1934-2019) is acknowledged as one of the most innovative figures in Scottish literature and culture. Painter, novelist, playwright, poet and editor, Gray frequently combined his diverse artistic talents within single works to challenge existing forms. Bristol, Clifton and Weston-Super-Mare: Chilcott; Burbidge; Whereat, 1853. Hardcover. Very Good. pp60 A detailed guide for visitors to the Royal Clifton Spa near Bristol published c1853. This is the one shilling and sixpence edition which includes the coloured fold out geological section of the Clifton Rocks on the north side of the River Avon from Sea Mills to the Hotwells. In publisher's blue cloth with embossed decoration and gilt titles. The booklet contains 2 accomplished etchings showing the exterior and interior of The Pump Room. Very good plus, the cloth is rubbed and lightly soiled to the lower cover, the gutters have been strengthened neatly with yellow tape to match the end papers; monogram of TC. The text and section are near fine, clean and undamaged. A very pleasing copy of this uncommon imprint. Very Good 1853

Camberley, Surrey: A Bradford, 1919. pp 125 A pocket handbook for British army officers covering all aspects of horsemanship including riding, tack, grooming and ailments common in horses. Very good in red cloth with titles printed in black to the upper cover, the text is nearly detached from the covers but seems to be complete with two fold out illustrations showing the Points of the Horse, and a comparison of the skeletons of horse and man. [13 Vols; 8x12cm) Bradbury and Agnew's 1870s pocket edition of Shakespeare in soft red morocco leather, all edges gilt, a little faded to spines but a very good set. The introduction to Volume I makes clear that this was an edition intended for the Shakespearian on the move: 'to form a handy readable series of Volumes, equally adapted for the Pocket, the Knapsack and the Railway.' Hong Kong: University of Hong Kong, 1955. 220 x 143 mm. Very Good. Offprint from Journal of Oriental Studies, Vol II, No 1, January 1955, pp 133-143. In very good condition in buff printed wrappers; covers lightly creased, marked and rubbed to spine. From the collection of Kenneth Robinson (1914-2005), a distinguished civil servant who became an expert on colonial government and administration. He was closely involved in international aspects of postwar planning, including former colonies, in south-West Africa (now Namibia), and became the Commonwealth Office expert on French West Africa. He became assistant secretary in the CO in 1946 (and head of the West African department), but resigned in 1948 to become reader in Commonwealth government at Oxford and subsequently director and professor of commonwealth affairs at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London. He was vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong from 1965 to 1972. Very Good 1955

Signed by the author on the title page, this excellent, clean presentation copy from the library of Laurie Lee is dedicated on the fly-leaf by Kavanagh 'Love to Laurie and Cathy from Patrick, September 1972'; laid in is the accompanying letter from Kavanagh to the Lees: 'I was very touched yesterday when a boy from the Radio Times called and told me you wondered where your copy of A HAPPY MAN was! The answer is, here, with my love.' Kavanagh then continues with tongue-in-cheek lamentations of the changes in the packing department at Chatto's; enquiring if Lee had a hand in obtaining Kavanagh his work making films at the BBC; and referencing Koestler, and Julian Symons' suspicion that this novel contains symbolism. Most attractively bound in contemporary calf: four raised spine bands, double blind fillet framing boards with floral corner ornaments; red speckled edges. 'Society Book' in an early hand to the first blank which has slightly ragged edges. Probably same hand, 'The Rev.d Mr Davids' to the head of the title page. At the tail of the title page an early ownership stamp: 'Iohn*Eyton' - probably a member of the book collecting Eyton family of Old Leeswood, Flintshire who were established in the Mold area. Bizarrely paginated (ESTC state 1) the book collates complete with both the Imprimatur and Errata and a colon after 'Rob Scott:' in the imprint: [20] pp122 [2] pp177-359, [4]. The Harmonia was written in an attempt to reconcile the apparent discrepancies between St. Paul and the Epistle of James on the relationship of faith and good works in Christian justification. Internally fresh in sound bindings; the volume numbers and price (8/6) have been added to the title page in manuscript. Volumes two and three are in uniform bindings over marbled boards which are rubbed to spine ends, edges and corners but overall are very good. Volume one is good in a similar binding over worn plain boards, with a short tear to the foot of the spine, and generally more signs of use. Contemporary ownership inscription to the front paste-downs. An attractive set. Good 1821

American Mineralogist, 1932. Soft cover. Good. pp 201-220 An article signed by its author James Gilluly on the igneous rocks of the 'pre-Tertiary terrane of the Blue Mountains of norheastern Oregon'. This offprint is signed in the top right hand corner of the front cover - 'Wth the compliments of James Gilluly'. There is some browning but the text is otherwise complete. This forms part of a large quantity of natural historical pamphlets recently acquired by Modernfirsteditions. Good 1932

Heckmondwike: Heckmondwike Herald, 1940. No Binding. Very Good. An original wooden newspaper hoarding with the Heckmondwike Herald poster from Friday May 24th 1940 still present. The hoarding which was handed down by the family which owned the newspaper over several generations records a series of local events in familiar headline terms. Below the paper's name and the date at the top of the poster, the top story is the 'Spen Valley By Election Latest Developments.' This took place one week later on June 1st 1940 and returned the Liberal William Woolley to Parliament unopposed. Below this is 'Staincliffe Presentation (Picture)' followed by the latest from France: 'More Heckmondwike Soldiers' Experiences' and finally the standby 'Deaths of Well-Known Residents'. The poster is torn and fragile but a remarkable survival nonetheless.
