London: Murray, 1873. Book. Illus. by 11 Maps and 29 Plans, 7 Views, complete. Good. Cloth. 4th Edition. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Limp red cloth in imitation of the German Baedeker guides. John Murray was the leading publisher of travel books in English at this time. The 1872 advertisements are interesting, but 30 pages have been torn out in the middle of the adverts. This is a thorough revision of the first editions by the leading Arabist, Sir Gardner Wilkinson. Solid and clean inside. The Binding has some rubs, and a split is starting along the front hinge cloth, but is protected from further damage by a clear, mylar dust jacket. I would not want to visit Egypt today without this thorough 19th Century guide , to compare the changes. .

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1898. Book. Illus. by Sixty original illustrations. Very Good. Decorative Cloth. Later Edition. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. A classuic, printed by Scribner's over and over again in the 1880s , 1890s and later. This is a very nice copy in orignal brown cloth with a pair of young skaters in red on the front board, Title in red on the front and in bright silver on the spine. Lots of illustrations throughout. No edge wea, except slight at the top of the spine. Inside, clean and tight with hinges fine and no prior owner marks. Six pages of Scribner ads at the end .

Witty portraits of the English, by a popular woodcut illustrator for the Illustrated London News. Wm. Thackeray is the author for the sketch, The Fashionable Authoress, and another Captain Rood and Mr. Pigeon. Douglass Jerrold authors five, including The Cockney, Debtor and creditor, and The Printer's Devil. Nimrod does two, Henry Brownning authors three, and Wm. Howitt contributes The Young Squire. Volume Two Only. One of the cornerstones of Africa travel, in a dull rubbed black cloth with weak hinges. Fine candidate for rebinding. Clean pages inside. Translated from the German by Ellen Frewer. Map in fine shape. Schweinfurth was a thorough and observant explorer, and deserves his reputation still. Hess-Coger 1564..

"New" edition, the same year as the first edition, in the original dark green cloth with a horned animal head in gilt on the front and a gilt title on the spines. Worn spine ends and two inches of the rear hinge at the top is split. A fair amount of wear to the edges and outside hinges. But it remains solid. Plus a paperback copy of Twenty-Five Gold-Tooled Bookbindings, in fine condition, an international tribute to Middleton by 25 of the world's finest design binders, all of the bindings of Middleton's Recollections. Highlights is in red cloth with gilt title on front and unfaded spine. No edge wear no rubs or bumps. Inside, as new , with Middleton's bold signature on the title page, dates 3-6-00. This was the date of a bookbinding conference in Rochester, NY, attended and in honor of Middleton and his gift to the Rochester Institute of Technology..

Title continued, "from the Henri Vever Collection". All four volumes from auctions in 1974, 1974, 1977 and 1997. Grey cloth with no edge wear, no prior owner marks, no stains or foxing. Dustjackets with the slightest hint of edgewear, protected in mylar sleeves. Henri Vever was an esteemed and wealthy jeweler in Paris who became one of the earliest collectors of Japanese prints in the late 19th century. He sold a part of his collection (assumed to be all of it at the time) and that is now the major part of the Tokyo National Museum. But the larger portion of his collection was hidden in his home from the Germans in WW Two, and did not reappear until the first Sotheby auction in 1974. This is a really nice record of what Tripoli was before Qadhafi, as well as a scholarly record on ancient ruins..

Three-quarter black calf spine and corners, with red marbled papers on the boards. Some rubs and edge wear, but hinges strong. Age toning to the paper throughout, and some foxing. Book plate says " English Rooms, Funchal, may be kept 10 days" No other hints of library status, so apparently a rooming house loaning system. An officer with the Gurkhas for 30 years, this is his record of travel, hunting, bird shooting and fishing. .

Irving's famous first novel, a satirical rendering of New York history, so reknown that knickerbockers became synonymous with New York City residents, not to mention the N.Y, "Knicks" basketball team. Very clean and tight inside, with one professional internal hinge repair. Pages 276 and 235.

An author, missionary and academic in China from 1890 to circa 1914, his wife a physician to the Emperor Dowager and her royal family. He taught science at Peking University. Home Life draws heavily on his wife's knowledge of women and children and their very private home life, not easily visible to a Westerner at that time. And of course very different from China home life a century later. Original black cloth with bright gilt title on the front and spine. The back hinge cloth has split, but this has not affected the solidity of the hinge. Protected in a mylar dust jacket. Very clean and tight inside, with a hint of foxing on a few pages. Quite scarce and a bargain because of the unattractive rear cloth split. .
