Wien and Gottingen: Chr. Ralfuß und Urmbruster; Dietrichfchen Buchbandlung, 1835. Leather bound. Good. Leather bound. 6 3/4" X 4 1/8". Text in German. The only engravings contained in these volumes appear on the half-titles for every "Lieferung," there are no other plates or illustrations, though the title indicates smaller copies of Hogarth's engravings by Carl Rahl and E. Riepenhausen. Half-title with engraving lacking for eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth "Lieferung." Marbled paper over boards, with spines backed in brown calf and lettered and stamped in gilt. Rather heavy wear to bindings, with corners spit and turned in, heavy scattered rubbign, light soiling, and wear to exterior hinges. Bindings are sound. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2010. Paperback. Very good. Paperback. 8 1/2" X 5 1/2". xix, 278pp. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of paper wraps. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Galen was probably the greatest medical writer of antiquity and certainly the most prolific. His Anatomical Procedures (c. 200 CE) embodies the results of a lifetime of practical research; it is largely based on verbatim notes of lectures delivered during actual demonstrations of dissection. The work comprises fifteen books, of which only the first eight-and-a-half have survived in the original Greek. An Arabic translation of the complete work has survived, however, and this has made possible the translation of the final six-and-a-half books (parts of book 9 and books 10-15). Duckworth's translation was originally made from a German translation of 1906, but for this 1962 edition it was revised by Lyons, working directly from the Arabic text, with the co-operation… Read More

Residue from removed sticker to rear cover of jacket. Bound in blue cloth over boards with spine lettered in gilt. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: De anatomicis administrationibus, a practical rather than theoretical work describing the procedure of dissection and physiological experiment, is, so Singer believed, a verbatim transcription of lectures delivered in Rome in AD 177. There is no comparable work in ancient literature and none more influential in the history of modern anatomy. This volume provides a translation of the surviving Greek text (Book I to the first part of Book IX) based on the Kuhn edition of 1821, and an introduction in which Singer discussed the various schools of medicine in Imperial Rome and the problems of translating a work written without an… Read More

London: Elliot Stock, 1911. Hardcover. Very good. Hardcover. This 1911 Garland of Shakespeare's Flowers winds together verses from the Bard's great plays and poems with bright full color illustrations of the flora he planted throughout his works. "[T]he poet garnered the beauty of our English flowers, and the rustic lore which had grown up about them....How loving and accurate was his knowledge of plants and flowers we shall never know until we ourselves have come to know and love them. He lies in the spring woods and notes the crimson spots in the golden cups of the cowslips, and, transmuted in his fancy, they become Titania's gorgeous pensioners" of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The red rose that was so famously invoked in Romeo and Juliet appears in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Henry VI and in his sonnets and is here beautifully paired with a vivid watercolor rendering by artist Emily Ledbrook. Here, you'll witness how Hemlock appears in Macbeth and King Lear, glimpse A Midsummer Night's Dream and… Read More
