Description:
London and Bath: J. Marshall, 1796. A very good copy.. Octavo chapbook, 16 pp., with a woodcut on the title; in later wrapper. Rare transportation chapbook: its subject is further explained on the verso of the title-page: "The story of poor Tricket the gamester. Shewing how... his gaming was the occasion of his being transported as a convict to Botany Bay". An ephemeral popular account of transportation to Botany Bay, this is by its nature elusive. Chapbooks were printed on cheap paper and sold at less than a penny each by chapmen or peddlers. Often illustrated with a crude woodcut on the title-page, they frequently had a moralising tone, as with this tale of a life of gaming and crime and subsequent transportation to Botany Bay. This work was issued by the Cheap Repository of Moral and Religious Tracts, which began publications in March 1795. Initiated by the zeal of Hannah More and Horace Walpole, the works were designed to be distributed among the poor and worthy. More's idea in publishing the… Read More

Description:
Newcastle-upon-Tyne: J. Marshall, MS note dated, 1807. Excellent.. Single sheet folded to form four leaves (eight pages paginated); edges untrimmed. A well-preserved early nineteenth-century English chapbook of popular ballads and ditties. This publication of eight pages is one of a series; each part being separately issued and individually titled 'A Garland of New Songs' with a different woodblock print. Such songbooks were sold for a few pennies and capture ephemeral melodies of the era, usually nostalgic and romantic songs. This particular chapbook is most interesting as it includes a contemporary lament for Nelson who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. .

Description:
London: Henry Colburn, 1838. Fine condition.. Engraving, 210mm x 142mm, in fine condition. A wonderful portrait of Joseph Holt (1756-1826), one of the most prominent Irish convicts of the early years of settlement at Sydney Cove. In 1798 Holt joined a band of rebels engaged in six months of guerrilla conflict near Dublin, but was captured in November of that year and sentenced to transportation. Aboard the convict transport Minerva Holt won the respect of Lieutenant William Cox (the man who oversaw the building of the road across the Blue Mountains) and became manager of his farms at Dundas and Canterbury upon their arrival. Despite displaying loyalty and great intelligence, Holt's seditious past proved a terrible burden: in September 1800 he was accused of treason and later acquitted by Governor King. Again in 1804 he was falsely accused of involvement in the rebellion at Castle Hill and sent to Norfolk Island, returning to Sydney two years later to work land he had purchased while working for Cox.… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam: Frans Buffa en Zonen, 1845. In fine condition.. Small folio, engraved title and 50 lithographed plates by P. Lauters, accompanying letterpress; a fine and complete copy in handsome contemporary green half morocco. An exquisitely-produced view book of the ports and peoples of the Dutch East Indies. Van de Velde's remarkably handsome book, produced at the famous lithographic workshop of Frans Buffa & Sons in Amsterdam, is a benchmark in the development of such works. The superb plates, with captions in Dutch and French, share much in common with other early mid-century works of voyages, especially those produced on the continent - one is reminded of the views associated with the near-contemporary account of the second Dumont d'Urville circumnavigation, by artists including Sainson, for example. They were lithographed by the master Paulus Lauters (1806-1876), who had earlier worked with Goubau in Brussels and been appointed to the Royal School for Engraving in that city in 1836. His earlier… Read More

Babylone" [in fact Paris]: n.p., 1760. Octavo, with four engraved plates by Cochin after Desfriches illustrating the second work "Mon Odyssée ou le Journal de Mon Retour de Saintonge"; contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt with red label. First edition: a marvellous imaginary work describing an utopian community, and prefiguring the uses of photography, television and the telephone. Tiphaigne de la Roche (1729-1774) was a physician, polymath and much-published writer. In Giphantie (an anagram of the author's name) the protagonist is lifted semi-conscious and transported by air to a beautiful garden, where a charming spirit guide shows him around a 'vaguely utopian society' (Lewis). The book is a good example of the imaginary voyage genre, using a quite plausible African setting, but is more renowned for the fantastical series of technical advances that are discussed in striking detail, including everything from prototype televisions to telephones. The discussion of the way in which the ruling spirits… Read More

Description:
Paris: Didot l'aîné, 1790. A very good copy.. Quarto, with ten folding engraved maps; later half red grained morocco. An analysis of the geographical knowledge of the ancient Greeks undertaken by Gossellin for a contest set by the French Académie Royale des Inscriptions. The ten folding maps are particularly interesting for comparing and contrasting the geographical ideas of the major ancient geographers including especially Erastothenes, Strabo and Ptolemy. They figure the Mediterranean and the classical world but extend as far east as the Indian sub-continent and the Indian Ocean, with the final map showing the East Indies as far south as the Nicobar Islands. On the basis of this work Gossellin was admitted into the Académie Royale des Inscriptions in 1791; in 1795 it was renamed and subsumed along with the other learned societies, including the main French Academy itself, into the Institut de France. Over subsequent decades the academies would reconstitute themselves but remained under the… Read More

Description:
Sydney, 1905. In exemplary original condition.. 9 carat gold matchbox, 15 gr; 45 x 30 mm; monogrammed on the back with interwoven letters "M.A.C." A remarkable memento of the pioneer Jewish educator Maurice (Moses) Abraham Cohen (1851-1923). Objects from the Australian Jewish community at the start of the 20th century (prior to the great waves of Jewish immigration) are very scarce. The monogrammed initials on this attractive presentation piece identify it as a gift from the Sydney Jewish Sabbath School to M.A. Cohen, the School's first principal. Born in Ukraine to a Sephardic family, Cohen was a talented linguist. Educated in England, after spells in India and Afghanistan he travelled to Australia in 1887 where he took up a role as the first headmaster of the Jewish Sunday School, just then established in Sydney within the Great Synagogue, Australia's finest synagogue. He went on to become head of the NSW Jewish Board of Education. At one time he was editor of Sydney's first Jewish weekly… Read More

Description:
Paris: Gide et Cie, 1848. A few very light spots in the text volume and its binding just wearing at extremities.. Text volume octavo, with a folding table, in original printed blue boards; with atlas folio, containing four charts and nine plates, in a good binding of quarter green calf. The geology section of the great Dumont d'Urville Antarctic expedition. The atlas volume here contains four superb coloured maps, two of them double-page geological maps of Australia and the South Pacific, the other two depicting geological details of Tasmania and Victoria, and the Straits of Magellan. The nine plates that follow are present in an early photographic form rather than as the usual lithographic plates: it has been suggested that these represent a further issue once the original lithographic printing had been exhausted. This section was prepared by M.J. Grange from the materials recorded by the expedition's naturalists. Another volume of text was published six years later. .

Description:
Sydney: Hordern House, 2011. 285 x225mm, 180pp, Case bound hardcover, dust jacket and colour illustrations. This catalogue of books and maps tells the story of a New World. Unlike the American discoveries to which that phrase is often taken to refer, this New World is the result of a push to the east and the south. The story of its development from theory to actuality is also the story of the exploration, exploitation, and occupation of the East Indies, South East Asia, and the Pacific as the competing national interests played out their grand battle. As this catalogue amply attests, the early modern voyages have a fascinating pre-history which stretches back to the classical geographers, whose works became some of the most important early printed books in the late 1400s and 1500s. Gradually the early imaginings became replaced by the belief that a vast Southern Continent could contain riches and exotica: the Ophir of King Solomon, the lands reported by Marco Polo and golden islands, reputed to have… Read More

Description:
London: Henry Bohn, 1851. Fine.. Handcoloured engraving, 350 x 250 mm; mounted. Rare satirical cartoon of Sir Joseph Banks, ridiculed for using the Royal Order of the Bath for self-promotion. Portraits of Banks by the most famous artists of the day strengthened his position as the great statesman of science, recognised by the king with the award of the Order of the Bath for increasing Britain's scientific, imperial and commercial reputation. But as social conditions in Britain were harsh, every opportunity was taken by the leading cartoonists to attack the monarchy and the people seen to be celebrated as their appointed heroes. In this light, the award to Banks attracted easy criticism, only exacerbated by the change that the award represented to the nature of the Order: although inaugurated by George I, for most of the eighteenth century it had been awarded chiefly for political, military or diplomatic appointments. Only towards the end of the century did it come to be more broadly given, with… Read More

Nangazaki [Paris]: de l'imprimerie Klnporzenkru," in the year 59749, 1749. Very good copy.. Two volumes in one, duodecimo, first title lightly stained and with an early ms attribution to 'Cahusac'; in old dark blue paper boards, red leather label. Rare: a minor classic, this is the wonderfully-contrived "Nagasaki" edition (actually Paris, of course) of this popular and inventive fiction, a work which enraged the authorities in France, presumably because this "true history" of the adventures of Grigri and the Portuguese missionaries to Japan was patently a satire on the shortcomings of contemporary France. Louis de Cahusac (1706-1759) was a successful playwright, famous as the long-suffering librettist for Rameau, specialising on highly exotic themes (Zoroastre; La naissance d'Osiris, and so on). De Cahusac was very in demand at mid-century, contributing articles to the Encyclopédie and being elected to the Academy of science and literature in Berlin, which presumably explains why this witty utopia… Read More
