Thomas Fraser, Dalbeattie, 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. 'With a reply thereto by Robert Malcolmson, and an Introduction and Notes by Thomas Fraser, and an Appendix.' An interesting copy with a letter from Fraser ( on his rather smart official notepaper ) to a Mr Crosby, of Reading, the purchaser of this copy. Letter is tipped in on the front free endpaper. In his letter Fraser describes the book as 'It is something at least out of the usual rut'. Also present in this copy, loosely inserted, is Fraser's invoice. The book was 6s 6d and the postage 4d. One of Fraser's limited editions of this title ( he published several ), in this case no. 8 of 35 copies on 'natural medium Japan paper' and signed by Fraser. By the author, Sibsagor, Assam, 1845. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. 'Walter Butler, who had married Elizabeth Chalcroft in 1628, fled Ireland in 1634 and settled near Chichester in present day West Sussex, England, where several generations of Butlers have lived. The line is continued through Thomas Butler (b. 1736), a son of John Butler (1697-1775) and his second wife, Ann Whitehead (d. 1756)'. An extremely rare pamphlet detailing the history of the West Sussex ( Fernhurst ) Butlers from c1634 through to the publication date. Captain John Butler was serving in the 55th Regiment Bengal Native Infantry when he compiled this short history, hence the place of publication. OCLC locates only one copy worldwide ( Boston Public Library ). A good copy but stitching slack and the text block is loosening in the binding. A candidate for attention from the binder or useable as a rather slack working copy. Text block is attached to the binding but all joints are cracked and fraying.
