When Beverley Nichols first published Garden Open Today in 1963, he was already well known for his "garden adventure" books such as Down the Garden Path and Merry Hall, whose unforgettable characters still live in the imaginations of present-day gardeners. In Garden Open Today, however, Nichols attempted a departure from his previous gardening books; he sought to distill 30 years of practical gardening experience in an entertaining fashion, and perhaps to strike back at critics who whispered that he was not a "real gardener." Our new facsimile edition includes a foreword and plant-name index by Roy C. Dicks.

Description:
A very clean and tight copy. The dust jacket has minor wear and in now in protective mylar. A Rare Edition The young narrator of this story tells of life in 1930s Italy as a Jew. He is fascinated with the aristocratic Finzi-Contini family, who live behind walls on an expansive estate. The beautiful Micòl Finzi-Contini first invites the narrator into her private, assimilated world as the laws restricting Jewish activity in the city intensify. From then on, the narrator frequents the family's estate to play tennis and study within the father's library, until his relationship with Micòl becomes more complex and confusing. The novel was the basis of the 1970 film directed by Victorio De Sica.

Description:
1st Edition Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine, unclipped dustwrapper now in protective mylar. Clean, tight and unmarked.
Summary: Anyone who has ever created a garden knows that it is a process replete with drama: there's the feverish excitement of drawing up plans and making lists of plants; the bleak depression of realizing that the plans will have to be altered; the "Eureka!" moment when a brilliant solution presents itself; the grim frustration of dealing with meddlesome neighbors and recalcitrant plants. For Beverley Nichols (1898-1983), making a new garden in a London suburb in the years just before World War II was positively operatic in its emotional trajectory. Fans of Beverley Nichols will find in Green Grows the City the same elements that have delighted them in his other books: the wit, the style, the cats, and of course Gaskin, gentleman's gentleman extraordinaire. Those new to Nichols are in for a rare treat.

Thus begins the strange and intriguing correspondence of Griffin and Sabine. And since each letter must be pulled from its own envelope, the reader has the delightful, forbidden sensation of reading someone else's mail. Griffin & Sabine is like no other illustrated novel: appealing to the poet and artist in everyone and sure to inspire a renaissance in the fine art of letter-writing, it tells an extraordinary story in an extraordinary way.
