Description:
London: Printed by Ja. Cottrel for Giles Calverts, 1658. First edition. Folio in 4s. pp. [18], 276; [2], 1-38 [4], 41, [2], 42-294, [10]. Lacking final blank leaf. Frontispiece portrait of Gadbury. Nineteenth century, half vellum, marbled paper covered boards. Some scuffing and rubbing to boards, label missing from spine, corners worn. Internally very good but with some browning, heavy in a few places. Overall a very good copy of one of the most important works of seventeenth century astrology. John Gadbury (1627-1704) was quite a character. In the 1640s and 50s, he was an enthusiastic religious radical joining the Levellers and Abiezer Coppe's "Family of Love". In 1652, he began to study astrology and from 1655 published annual almanacs. As well as judicial astrology, Gadbury's other interests extended to physics, astronomy, navigation and exploration. By the late 1650s, Gadbury's political and religious affiliations were shifting and by the time of the Restoration in 1660, he had, conveniently,… Read More

Description:
Burgess Hill, Sussex Charles N Blanchard 1894, 1894. Fourth edition (but actually first and only edition - Worldcat records only this edition, sixteen of them. Presumably Swann wanted readers to think that his work was so successful that it was frequently republished). 8vo. 210x135mm. pp. [iv], 426. Red calf, upper and lower boards decorated with gilt borders inside which is a roll tooled border with leaves, flowers and plants. Spine with five raised bands. Compartments lavishly decorated in gilt save for second and third compartments with green labels lettered in gilt. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Slight rubbing to the joints and to head and foot of spine but overall in very good condition and internally near fine. In the centre of the upper cover is a gilt floral cross design around which is stamped in gilt "Hofwyl" "Mont' Emaro". Hofwyl was the name of a set of Swiss technical schools one of which was attended by the author, Edward-Gibbon Swann and Mont'Emaro is referred to in the prologue… Read More

Description:
Cheltenham: Printed by S.Y.Griffith for Messrs Rivingtons 1824, 1824. First (and apparently only) edition. 8vo. 180x115mm. pp. xiv, [2], 304. Modern brown cloth, lettered in gilt to spine. Internally very good with some toning to edges. Ex-library stamp on verso of title page. A nice copy of this collection of thirty-eight short essays on a variety of subjects including Materialism, Byron's Cain, A Mystery, Bulls, Fortune Telling, Sleep, Dreams, Atheism, Light, Sound, the Employment of Children in Churches, the Language of Birds and Nonentity of Matter. An odd book. We have been unable to trace the identity of the author. It appears in this one edition only. There is no obvious theme linking the thirty-eight essays (although the metaphysical, the mystical and the ethereal are pre-occupations) and it seems that the pieces were written purely for this collection as they exist nowhere else. We are not alone in being perplexed. The Monthly Review of September to December 1824 said of it: "There is a… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for A. Millar 1749, 1749. Second edition, revised and corrected. 12mo. 155x90mm. pp. x, 146. Contemporary calf, spine with four raised bands, compartments decorated in gilt, second compartment with red morocco label lettered in gilt. Corners slightly bumped, small hole to joint at foot of spine, a few marks to covers. Small tear to margin of B2 not affecting text. Slightly cropped (when the book was bound) but text unaffected. Otherwise, internally very good. Front free endpaper has ownership inscription of Miss R. Assheton in a beautiful copperplate hand. A nice copy of a scarce book, this revised second edition, intended "for the use of schools" appearing in the same year as the first. The Governess is a collection of stories all taking place in a school run by the nominatively determined Miss Teachum. The British Library describes it as "perhaps the first school story" and it is important in being one of the earliest fictional works for children, earlier books… Read More

Description:
n.p. n.p 1657, 1657. Grant of Probate of the will of John Bennett of Hawkhurst in the County of Kent to Anne Bennett his relict and executor named in the will. Single sheet, 152x131mm. The grant of probate is signed by the officers of the Court, a Court which, as the first words of the document remind us, was under the authority of "Oliver, Lord Protector of ye Commonwealth of England, Scotland, Ireland ye Dominions Territories thereto belonging". Everyday Court documents (such as grants of probate) from the Commonwealth appear to be uncommon, their interest lying in what they reveal about the fluid and flexible conservatism of the English legal system, little changing save for the name of the person in whom the State was embodied - King or Commoner, it made little difference.
