Privatly printed very rare cricket book, and one more on the idiosyncratic side, the humorous story of the summer of 1981 which three schoolmasters spent watching and playing cricket while Botham, Willis and Brearley lifted the Ashes for England. Very rare first edition, one of 1000 copies produced. Although Gandhi left South Africa in 1914, he remained very interested and involved in South African racial and social politics. 'It was in South Africa that Gandhiji formulated the concept and practice of satyagraha. It was in South Africa that his attitude to the social problem of India crystallized' (p. v). These writings of Gandhi, sometimes from very hard to trace printed sources, are prefaced by Trevor Huddleston. He writes that the book 'appears at precisely the right moment in the history of the struggle against the institutional racism know as 'apardheid' … Here for the fist time the true significance of Mohandas Gandhi's sojourn in South Africa has been spelt out' (p. iii). Original green illustrated cloth with illustrated dust-wrappers; pp. 422, frontispiece retaining tissue guard, plates after photographs, a little marginal fraying to the rarely seen wrappers, otherwise very clean and fresh, the publisher's filing copy (stamp to half-title), publisher's bookplate inside fornt cover. Second edition (first, 1928, third edition published in 1940) of a very useful book on tropical gardening, based on a series of articles published in the Malay Mail. 'I have endeavoured to give the result of my own experience of gardening in Malaya over a number of years. Practically all this experience was gained in my own garden at Kajang, Selangor, which I saw grow from partly cleared jungle land - as it was when I went to it in 1910 - to the garden which I left seventeen years later with many regrets in December, 1926' (Preface).

First edition, scarce, of a monograph of Garibaldi, written whilst the Italian unification process was still unfolding. Chambers, a Lieutenant-Colonel with the army had been to Italy and collected first-hand reports, among them much information on the battle of Aspromonte, where Garibaldi was wounded and which halted the unification for a while and ended with a cease-fire. Original green gloth, lettered in gilt, illustrated in black; pp. [iv], 304, highly illustrated throughout after photographs and drawings, large folding lithographic map (80 x 78 cm), printed in four colours in rear pocket; head and tail of spine a little rubbed, very light toning internally; a very good and clean copy. First edition. This very rare work is a fascinating first-hand account of Eastern Arabia, Basrah and Kuwait in 1912, at a time when Saudi rule was in its infancy. The first edition, in Danish is rare. A first English edition was printed during WWI, in 1916 in Cairo by the Arab Bureau with a print run of only 100 copies and is virtually unobtainable. It was published again in English in 1969 and this edition is becoming rare as well. Gerald de Gaury, who re-translated the book into English in 1968 states in the preface that the original Danish edition is 'now becoming rare' (p. vii). Aquatint portrait frontispiece and 12 aquatint plates engraved by David Allan, pp.18 of engraved music at rear. Corners rubbed, a little light browning to margins of plates, neat ink name dated 1848, generally a very good crisp copy. "Ramsay’s play, The Gentle Shepherd first published in 1725, enjoyed massive success both in his lifetime and for several years after his death. Five volumes, 4to. 20th-century green half morocco over cloth-covered boards, spines with raised bands and lettered in gilt; occasional spotting to text; from Hertford Public Libraries (released in the 1990s) with their stamps; complete with appendix, subsriber's list to volume one (including William Wilberforce) and some publisher's advertisements at the end, without half-titles and subscriber's list at the end of the fifth volume. First edition in English, 'for its additions, etc., … infinitely superior to the original' (Sabin). The impressive work had appeared in Madrid between 1786 and 1789. It remains the gazetteer and complete political, social and natural history of the Americas at the end of the 18th century. First edition, fourth binding with less common patterned paper boards in tan, lavender, brown and gold. Geography and Plays is a collection of Gertrude Stein’s writing from about 1908 to 1920. Stein was born in America, but moved to Paris when she was 29. In her Parisian salon, the leading figures of modernism, including Picasso, Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Matisse, would meet. Her activities during World War II have been the subject of analysis and commentary.
