Some light overall soil, covers split along lower 1" of spine.. Correspondence related to accusations of libel made by Gerrit Smith against Royal Phelps and Watts Sherman of the New York Democratic Vigilant Association. The dispute arose from the latter publishing a "Manifesto" in which it was alleged that Gerrit Smith had full prior knowledge of John Brown's plan at Harper's Ferry. That Smith was well acquainted with and had supported Brown was not disputed, but Smith denied knowing Brown's plans for a bloody uprising.

S. Constitution and the national ban on alcoholic beverages it brought in 1919. An interesting and well-reasoned discourse on the state of the Civil War about a month after the Battle of Gettysburg, from the Union perspective. Rev. Smith concludes with answers to objections such as that the aim of the war had shifted from preservation of the Union to the abolishment of slavery, the use of black soldiers, etc. Quite scarce. President James Buchanan declared January 4, 1861 a national day of fasting and prayer in an effort to calm both sides in the brewing secession crisis. This was the earnest sermon preached by Reverend Chew to his flock in Prince George's County, Maryland on that day. He here argues "that it was God who gave to our forefathers the wisdom to construct this government...[and] that though it may occasionally need repairs, those repairs should be made calmly, dispassionately, with circumspection and with caution; and that it is entirely too sacred a fabric to lightly and needlessly destroyed. Certain it is that if it is once destroyed, its place will never again be supplied. " Bound in printed paper covers over a saddle-stitched binding. Covers have a few chips along spine and edges, top fore corner of rear cover is chipped away.

Very good to near fine overall.. Engravings, some colored. The July through December 1843 issues of Graham's Magazine, of which Edgar Allan Poe had recently been editor. This volume contains three reviews by Poe, including his review of James Fenimore Cooper's historical novel, "Wyandotté." <br /> <br /> It was while editor of Graham's that Poe developed his bitingly sarcastic style of literary criticism, and that style is full flower here.
