32-36 pages with plates, figures and bibliography. Quarto (10 1/4" x 7") bound in original publisher's stapled wrappers. American Antiquity Volume XIV, Number 1 complete issue. First edition. In 1932 and 1933 the Laboratory of Anthropology and the University of New Mexico started independently on research projects which involved certain provocative cultural manifestations in north central New Mexico. Dr. H. P. Mera published the results of his investigations in 1938 under the title, "Some Aspects of the Largo Cultural Phase, Northern New Mexico." In the same year, the author reported on some preliminary work in the same area in an article entitled "The Gallina Phase." As the university has continued its work in the more easterly section of this area, the name "Gallina" is retained in this connection, although the two types of material are obviously referable to the same cultural horizon. In the excavating seasons just prior to the war, sporadic excavations were carried on in this area and a survey of… Read More

viii+131+[blank]+1 ad] pages with diagrams. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's green cloth with label to spine. (Van der Linde 1523; Whyld: 1828,5) First edition. The London and Edinburgh chess match, which was played by correspondence, was begun in the year 1824. It was the result of a challenge given by the Edinburgh Club, which was then only in its infancy. The terms agreed on were, that the match should consist of three won games; and that, in case of any game being drawn, a new one, begun by the same opener, should take its place. The match commenced on 23d April 1824. Two games were opened simultaneously. The first game was opened by the Edinburgh Club; and in sending their first answering move, the London Club also sent the first move of the second game. The first game, which consisted of 35 moves, was, on 14th December 1824, declared to be drawn. The second, which consisted of 52 moves, was resigned by the London Club on 23d February 1825. The third game—opened by the… Read More

Edited with the assistance of the English Masters, Zukertort, Steinitz, Mason and Bird. Annotated by Zukertort, Steinitz, Mason and Bird. (Betts 25-16) (Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana 5216) First edition. The London 1883 chess tournament was a strong chess tournament among most of the leading players of the day. It was won convincingly by Johannes Zukertort (22 points out of 26) ahead of Wilhelm Steinitz (with 19 points). Remarkably, Zukertort was already assured of victory with three rounds to go, having scored an astonishing 22/23. He then lost his last three games against relatively weak players, probably due to exhaustion. The tournament established Zukertort as rivaling Steinitz to claim to be the best player in the world, and led to the World Chess Championship 1886 match between the two… Read More

Jose Raul Capablanca did not, however, issue a formal challenge at this time. On February 10, 1928 Capablanca wrote FIDE president Alexander Rueb, explaining his ideas about future changes to the world chess championship. Capablanca recommended altering the playing times and reducing the number of games to 16. He also forwarded this letter to Alekhine. Alekhine interpreted this as a wish to change the… Read More

The top three finishers (Pillsbury, Chigorin, and Lasker) plus fifth-place finisher Steinitz agreed to play; fourth-place finisher Tarrasch declined. Even so, St. Petersburg was enormously strong; the top five places on the December 1895 Chessmetrics list are occupied by Lasker, Tarrasch, Chigorin, Steinitz, and Pillsbury respectively. 584-605 pages with tables and references cited. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Volume 61, number 4. First edition. In their classic cross-cultural study "Games in Culture," Roberts,Arth, and Bush (1959) delineated a three-category classification for games (i.e., physical skill, strategy, and chance) as well as a definition of games. Both the classification system and the definition have become anthropological standards. Roberts et al. also found that several variables correlated with the presence-absence of different game types. However, the sample that Roberts et al. used was relatively small (50 societies) and nonstandard. The purpose of this study is to replicate the Roberts et al. study using codes for games for the Standard Cross-Cultural Sample. In addition, minor extensions of the results found by Roberts et al. are presented.Condition: Spine sunned, previous owner's name to front wrapper, corners bumped else very good.

75+[5 note] pages with diagrams and tables, Quarto (10 1/4" x 7") bound in green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Second edition.
José Raúl Capablanca y Graupera was the third World Champion, reigning from 1921 until 1927. Renowned for the simplicity of his play, his legendary endgame prowess, accuracy, and the speed of his play, he earned the nickname of the "Human Chess Machine".
Capablanca s style also heavily influenced the styles of later World Champions Botvinnik, Robert James Fischer and Anatoly Karpov. Botvinnik observed that Alekhine had received much schooling from Capablanca in positional play, before their fight for the world title made them bitter enemies. While not a theoretician as such, he wrote several books including A Primer of Chess, Chess Fundamentals and My Chess Career.
