This collection was arranged and published by his son Andrew Johns. He was born in 1840 in Redhill, Surrey. On the day of his mother's burial, and with the prospect of looking after three young children, his father left and was never heard of again; he was moved to an orphanage at Witley, near Godalming, Surrey. Henry worked for three or four years, after leaving school at age 16, working in a brickmacking factory, and then obtained a situation in a horticultural nursery at Milford, near Godalming.
