Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked, ornate border stamped in gilt on boards, gilt-stamped lettering in red leather spine label, spine compartmented in gilt; large 4to (330 x 243 mm); pp. 125, [1], with 4 color engravings (all in proof before letters) after Monsiau. First and only edition with Monsiau's illustrations. This handsome and imposing volume was one of the earliest works to appear in France with color-printed engravings. The publisher, Defer de Maisonneuve, was an innovator in this regard, publishing a number of works with colour engravings between 1786 and 1796. The four designs by Nicolas-Andre Monsiau are reproduced in soft, delicate pastel hues by J. F. azenare and Nicolas Colibert. Children’s book of Continental costumes printed in Leipzig at the turn of the 19th century. A rare illustrated work first published in 1796, plentiful in delicately hand-colored engravings of native peoples from around the world. This, the second part, was probably written solely by Karl Seidel, a teacher at the Tochterschule (Public Girls School) in Dessau. Title-page printed in red and black. Lacking the frontispiece. Backstrip torn and binding broken. Contemporary notation inked discreetly on title-p., and some underlining here and there; but text block, and plates in particular, are overall nice and clean. Sold as is. An important early work on crustaceans.

Period paneled calf with the monogram "IA" in blind. Binding worn, rebacked; toned throughout, slight staining at rear. 1676 ownership inscription of a John Allason of Godfrid, and apparently bound for him. The medicinal qualities of a wide variety of foods and herbs are discussed in this fascinating volume. This particular copy is enhanced with annotations and marginalia throughout, and a full page of botanical notes on the blank preceding the title.

Binding quite worn, but with nice, untrimmed text block, just a little foxed. Rare first edition of this important Persian grammar with dictionary in Latin, French, and Italian, by one of the earliest Christian missionaries to Persia. Joseph Labrosse went to the Orient in 1664 and spent 10 years in Persia and Arabia, becoming Prior at Ispahan and Basrah. He later went to Constantinople, where he gained the protection of the Sultan for his mission. The Gazophylacium was priased by Bernier, Petits de la Croix and Chardin. Labrosse's other major work was on Oriental pharmaceutics. Brunet III, 719.

Decorated with cherub, angel, and bird motifs. Small closed tears at folds; some faint browning here and there; 2 small archival tape repairs on recto; 2 older tape repairs on the verso.
