There is some scuffing to both boards and light wear at the corners, but the binding is very clean and sound. Endpapers are marbled. Contents: initial blank; title; advert 2pp; index pp v-x with errata; text pp 1-519 with numerous delicate wood engravings; Addenda pp 520-525 - introducing 2 new species (wombat and platypus); ad 1p; final blank. Original page marker present. Contents are very clean and sound. Paper is toned to varying degrees and there is occasional spotting - noticeable in the text next to the gutter of pp 447-450. P 301/302 has lost part of the side edge - this does not affect the text.

Description:
Bungay: C Brightley and T Kinnersley, 1804 First edition in 2 volumes comprehensively illustrated with high quality plates and maps. The Reverend Blomfield drew on a variety of sources, eg Oliver Goldsmith, Bruce to produce a work which covers a wide range of topics including 'animated nature', astronomy, geology and 'mathematical geography' as well as a tour of the world as it was known then. Blomfield clearly wanted to produce a work that was so comprehensive that it was the only work that anyone would need to read on those subjects. The plate listing only refers to around half the plates and maps. Both volumes retain the original marbled boards which are rubbed, and have new pigskin leather spines and corners and new endpapers. The spines do not have labels. Volume I, 827 pp, contains frontispiece, vignette title page, preface, text covering geology, nature, europe, and much else, and 9 full page engravings, 10 full page maps, 1 folding map and 1 folding chart. Volume II, dated… Read More

Description:
London: Printed by T. N. for Thomas Basset, Samuel Lowndes, Christopher Wilkinson, William Cademan, and Jacob Tonson, 1683 A fair copy of the first English translation of this classic work by the then Historiographer of France, Francois Eudes de Mezeray 1610-1683. Classed as 'fair' because it lacks the frontispiece and the contemporary full leather binding is worn, with some splitting at the joint between the spine and the front board. The contents are generally very clean and sound. The binding has raised bands to spine and the remains of lining to the boards. The endpapers appear contemporary. Contents: title page (small repaired tear to bottom edge; some older reinforcement to the gutter; very small ?worm track to top); dedication to James of York 2pp; To the Reader 2pp; text to book I ;; 1-353 (some light marking to pp 51, 97/8; small tear to bottom margin p 325 with a little loss); blank; title page Book II; text pp 357-654 (small worm track in gutter of bottom margin to p 425; loss of… Read More

Description:
London: Adam Islip, 1627 A fair copy of the extremely scarce '2nd impression' of Edward Grimeston's Generall Historie of the Netherlands. Grimeston was known as prolific translator, and the first edition of the Historie was largely taken from J F Le Petit's 'La Grand Chronique Ancienne et Moderne de Hollande'. It was a fairly faithful translation, but he researched the subject, adding text on the years 1601-1608, using sources such as Emanuel Demetrius. It was very popular but he was criticised for not including more on the efforts and achievements of the English troops in Flanders. In his address at the beginning of the 2nd, 1627, edition, he states that he did in 1608 'observe my Authors......They were men borne in those countries, who would arrogate as much as might be, to their own Nation'. In the new edition, he 'had conference with some of the great Commanders and Captaines' from the English side, and endeavoured to redress the balance. He wanted to also bring the edition up to date, but… Read More

Description:
London: Edward Arnold, 1905 A good to very good copy of the 2nd impression of this classic collection of ghost stories. In the original beige canvas binding with yapp edges and with 4 black and white plates by James McBryde. This was M R James first collection of stories which he had begun many years previously, reading them to friends. James McBryde was one of those friends and offered to illustrate the volume, but sadly died after only 4 illustrations were completed. The binding has been rebacked relaying the original spine and the endpapers have been retained with professional repair at the joints. The binding is sound and clean with some darkening to the spine. There is a signature dated 1905 to the front endpaper. Contents are clean with the occasional light mark and general toning to the text paper. There are some tiny red speckles in a small area in the top margin of p39, a few light brown spots in the top margin of pp 117-8, and the final page has a couple of marked areas. There are a few… Read More

Description:
LONDON: Groombridge and Sons A VG copy in the original green decorative cloth binding with gilt plant pictures and titles to front board and spine, and blind stamped decoration to rear board. The boards have bevelled edges. This work is generally attributed to Shirley Hibberd. It is clear from the Preface that it contains work from a number of authors, so it is likely that Hibberd had the editorial role. A number of the colour plates appear in 1870's copies of the Floral World - again edited by Hibberd. It is undated but is probably late 1870's/early1880's. With title page in red and black inks; colour printed frontispiece and 35 further colour printed plates, and numerous black and white illustrations - some full page. The binding is slightly shaken with a little bumping to corners and wear to edges including spine joint edges. The original endpapers are present. The contents are generally very clean apart from the very occasional brown spot. Some of the plant outlines can be seen faintly… Read More
