Description:
London: Punch, 1955. This original printed appearance of two Punch cartoons featuring Winston S. Churchill comes from the personal collection of Gary L. Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. These two cartoons appeared thus on p.324 of the 9 March 1955 issue of Punch. The artist is Michael Cummings (1919-1997), who worked for Punch for more than 30 years. These two cartoons date from less than a month before Churchill resigned his second and final premiership, at age 80, on 5 April 1955. In the first cartoon, Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Defence Minister Macmillan carry an H Bomb marked "for export only." In a defense debate, Churchill said the Soviets would have enough H bombs to launch a major war in three or four years. By that time each side would have sufficient capacity to annihilate each other. Punch notes that… Read More

In this cartoon, published in the final months of Churchill's second and final premiership, a gathering of British political leaders - Morrison, Attlee, Eden, Churchill, and Butler - look pensive beneath a cloud shaped and labeled as "Formosa". On Formosa (Taiwan), the surviving Chinese Nationalists were confronted by the Red Chinese Army. Description:
Dundee and London: John Long & Co, Ltd., 1903. 1st Edition. Paperback. We have never before seen or heard of a copy of this very early pamphlet, which is previously unknown to Churchill bibliographers Ronald Cohen and Fredrick Woods. The subject is the great policy debate of the time - free trade vs. protectionism. The pamphlet contains 25 items described in the preface as "principal arguments advanced by leading speakers in the Fiscal Controversy". Churchill's contribution is a condensation of his article in the November 1903 issue of Monthly Review (Cohen C224, Woods C32). It appears on pages 34 and 35 of the pamphlet under the title "Retaliation Examined" and is introduced with a brief summary of the subject and a small profile drawing of Churchill. In the article, Churchill takes issue with Balfour's Sheffield speech of early October 1903 in which Balfour advocated a retaliatory tariff. This was a critical argument at a critical time for Churchill. Free Trade was the policy issue that… Read More

Description:
Sacramento, California: The Churchilliana Company, 1977. First U.S. edition. Hardcover. This copy of the first U.S. edition in the publisher’s "Collector's" binding is in as-new condition with no wear, soiling, previous ownership marks, or any signs of handling or use. We acquired this copy long ago from the publisher's unsold stock. Published in 1906, For Free Trade is the second scarcest of all Churchill's book-length works (second only to Mr. Brodrick's Army). The good news is that there is an alternative for both readers and collectors. This meticulous facsimile reprint of the original 1906 first edition was produced in 1977 and is the first American edition. The original 119 pages plus red card wraps are faithfully reproduced and 5 additional pages are added at the front including a preface by Manfred Weidhorn. The publisher offered two grades of binding – a brick red cloth “library” binding and this “collector’s binding” featuring brown buckram spine over yellow-tan linen cloth covered… Read More

Description:
New York: British Information Services, 1946. 1st Edition. Paperback. This publication is very likely the first printed appearance of Churchill's speech of 5 June 1946 to the House of Commons. We know of no earlier printings. Collectors please note that this item is not found in either Cohen's or Woods' Bibliography. Though other issues of British Speeches of the Day are noted by Cohen, including No.5 & 7 of this series (Cohen E156/1 and E157 respectively), this particular issue was unknown to Cohen. This speech is from Churchill's period as Leader of the Opposition. A year earlier, Churchill's Conservatives had been soundly defeated in the General Election at the end of the war. Churchill would front opposition to the Labour Government until the General Election of 1951, which returned the Conservatives to majority and Churchill to the office of Prime Minister. Churchill's substantial 14-page speech opens with some less than complimentary exchanges with a Communist M.P., and then proceeds with a… Read More

Description:
London: The Times Publishing Company, Limited, 1943. The Times edition, only printing. Pamphlet. This wartime pamphlet edition published by The Times is the first standalone publication of Winston Churchill’s wartime broadcast of 21 March 1943 from Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country home. Composed of 8 pages, wire-stitched, in self-wrappers, this is a collector-worthy copy of a perishable wartime publication. The wrappers are complete and crisp, with no losses or tears, and remain firmly attached. The single binding staple shows no rust. Two rust spots on the front cover near the spine appear to have transferred from a different pamphlet stored with this one. Some isolated spots mark the covers, which are otherwise exceptionally clean with light wrinkling to the lower spine. On the night Churchill gave his address, Montgomery’s North Africa offensive, codenamed ‘Pugilist’, would began at 10:00 PM. The offensive was vital – the Allies’ total victory in Tunisia in the coming months not… Read More

Description:
London, Horbury & San Diego: Rickaro Books and Churchill Book Collector, 2019. First, limited, and numbered edition. Hardcover. This is the first, limited, and hand-numbered edition of an essay presenting a previously unrecorded letter by T. E. Lawrence. In 2018, the subject letter, penned in 1925 entirely in T. E. Lawrence’s hand, was discovered laid into copy “50” of the 1935 British limited issue of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Lawrence wrote this letter while posted to the Royal Air Force RAF Cadet College at Cranwell, where he completed the famous 1926 “Subscribers'” or “Cranwell” edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. This letter consists of 22 lines written by Lawrence on the blank verso of an RAF “Application for Mechanical Transport.” Lawrence remains a remarkably enigmatic figure. We investigate his character and his exploits though his published works - which span the WWI Arab revolt and life inside the inter-war RAF to crusader castles and ancient Greek translation to technical manuals… Read More

Description:
London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1962. First edition, second and final printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, second and final printing, signed and dated by Churchill in the final year of his life. In two lines in the center of the title page Churchill inked his name “Winston S. Churchill” and the year “1964”. The signature’s unsteady hand shows the toll of multiple strokes, compounded by the general infirmities of advanced age. Provenance is of note; this book was previously part of the famous Churchill collection of Malcolm S. Forbes Jr. Churchill spent his final years as “a living national memorial" of the time he had lived and the Nation, Empire, and free world he had served. Before Churchill’s elaborate January 1965 state funeral at St. Paul’s cathedral in London, Churchill’s coffin passed through the countryside on a train. Oxford don Dr. A. L. Rowse recorded “The Western sky filled with the lurid glow of winter sunset; the sun setting on the British Empire.” It is… Read More

Description:
New York City: Life Magazine, 1949. Publisher's exhibition. This massive and visually arresting archive of 24 large exhibition posters was issued in 1949 by the editors of LIFE magazine as a promotion for the serialization of Winston S. Churchill’s Their Finest Hour, volume two of his six-volume memoir of The Second World War. Each illustrated and captioned poster measures 32 x 24 inches and weighs nearly two pounds, mounted on dense, rigid, heavy card with rounded corners, each corner with a neat, circular mounting hole to facilitate exhibition. All 24 posters remain housed together in their original wood shipping crate, which is printed “THEIR FINEST HOUR” on the side. The lid and bottom feature original “FRAGILE | HANDLE WITH CARE” stickers and the lid is printed “OPEN | THIS | SIDE”. The aesthetic effect of the crate and contents is almost archaeological, not to mention formidable; the crate measure 36 x 26 x 5 inches and, full of posters, weighs nearly 75 pounds.
