Description:
CAMP MEADE WADSWORTH GORDON AMERICA HOMEFRONT. Good. 1914. On offer is the absolutely fascinating and deeply detailed wartime homeland diary of Paul James McGahan. McGahan starts as a simple orderly, and works his way up to private 1st class, and then through hard work and tremendous diligence, shows himself to be an exemplary soldier, and gets commissioned and ends up as a 1st Lieutenant shortly before WW1 ends. This diary is remarkably detailed, with almost every day written as a fully detailed entry. Most impressive are the months of hard training that McGahan does, with each training schedule written out in its entirety, so the reader gets a full scope of just how difficult and intense the military training is. The diary is signed “Paul James McGahan. 1325 Mt. Vernon St. Philadelphia, PA.” The same page also has a detailed breakdown of all the ranks that McGahan has during the course of 1918, where he earned them, and from what time period he held the rank. In the beginning… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1760. Two handwritten ALS, one dated Paris, February, and what appears to be 1760 (maybe 1750), letter to Antoine Le Camus (1722 - 1772 physician, poet [author of La Medecine de l'Espirit] also noted for warning the women of his day against the use of cosmetics having mercury). Monsieur Desgranges writes in the first letter an apology for not having responded to Camus' earlier letters. It appears Desgrange's father had only recently told his son of the accumulation of letters unanswered. He asks Camus to come by and is very apologetic. Letter 2, undated and apparently unconnected, wherein Desgrange urges Camus to see him as the medicines he is taking are not working. He complains of a 5-day headache and a sore that is not healing. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS (1792-1872). Born in 1792, Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper, including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1753. ALS dated March 9th 1753, Abbe Ducarme writes a reassuring letter to Antoine Le Camus (1722 - 1772 physician, poet also noted for warning the women of his day against the use of cosmetics having mercury). A Monsieur Fueron has loudly criticized Camus' latest work entitled "La Medecine de l'Espirit" (The Spirit's Medicine). The Abbot insists on telling Camus his ideas are excellent explaining that he has noticed people inflicted with ailments and symptoms as desrcibed in Camus' work further attesting to the truths as printed by Camus. In very good shape save for slight fault to the at the top edge and where the letter was sealed. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS (1792-1872). Born in 1792, Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper, including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and the entire inventories of booksellers. Description:
Paris Handwritten over four pages, not easily read, undated but assuredly mid-18th century as are other documents in this very same file, the author writes of his understanding of the lymphatic system and swollen glands all in the first person. Very interesting but requiring further research. "I wish to have one copy of every book in the world," he declared to a friend. He very nearly succeeded. His collection ultimately grew to more than 100,000 books and at least 60,000 manuscripts. As a result of his extravagant purchases, Sir Thomas was permanently on the verge of bankruptcy and was constantly pursued by creditors. So many books arrived at his house that it was impossible to unpack his acquisitions… Read More

Description:
France. Good with no dust jacket. 1856. Ephemera. On offer are three interesting public bulletins printed by the French government during the CrimeanWar. The documents are entitled Moniteur Des Communes or Community Monitor. The Moniteur published official and unofficial texts of the French Second Empire, the government of France under Napoleon III. During this period, France made extensive headway in developing large-scale public works such as railroad networks and a rebuilding of Paris. Externally, France aggressively built up its foreign empire. The Moniteur gave a brief synopsis of what was happening in various departments in the French government at a particular time. As two copies carry dates one week apart, it is reasonable to assume that this is a weekly publication. It was published by the Ministry of the Interior. The first issue was printed on January 31st, 1856, the 2nd was printed a week later on February 7th and the 3rd was printed on October 2nd. The first issue makes… Read More

Description:
France. Good with no dust jacket. 1798. Ephemera. On offer is a fascinating legal document from the early years of the French Revolution describing legal action between two parties, ‘Bernadet’ and ‘Jacques Nadel’. The document was written on “cinq thermidor au sept”, which is the seventh year of the French Republic, or Summer, 1798. The legal action described in the document involves 2,000 francs, which is significant since this was at a time when the average annual income for a worker was about 450 francs. An excerpt from the manuscript follows: Extrait de registre de bureau de [ ] du juge de pays du premiere arrondissement situ commune de Bourges department du Cher... [Translation: extract from the register of the office of the country judge of the first arrondissement in the commune of Bourges department of Cher]. An additional excerpt follows: Est comparis le citoyen Bernadat fonde de pourvoir de citoyen Jacques Naudel propriataire demeurans en cette… Read More

Description:
Bourges, France. Good. N.D.. Ephemera. French Revolution Commerce Document with Defaced Fleur de Lis SealsOn offer is a fascinating manuscript fragment dating from the early French revolutionary period. The manuscript is a sales document. It was drafted in the city of Bourges which lies in central France. Although very hard to read, it does clearly state that it is a record of a sale. Excerpt from document: Consente par M. Charles Penier, pere jardinier et Marie Lige sa femme au M. Charles Penier leur fils ...[Translation: Consented by Mr. Charles Penier, father gardener and Marie Lige his wife to Mr. Charles Penier their son...]The reverse details the transaction but the specifics are difficult to read. However, of note are the 2 tax stamps applied to the document. Such seals normally bear the Fleur de Lis within a circle supported by a scroll bearing the words “la Loi du Roi” signifying the King’s Law. In each case, the stamps have been mutilated to remove the Fleur de… Read More
